Bali, the Island of the Gods, is a dream destination for many travelers. Its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality make it a must-visit. But what’s it like to explore Bali in a wheelchair? My partner and I recently embarked on a journey to find out. As a wheelchair user, Nick faced some challenges, but we also discovered that Bali has plenty of accessible gems to offer. Here’s the first part of our itinerary, focusing on accessibility, accommodations, and dining experiences.

Day 1 & 2: Grand Mega Resort & Spa Bali

We landed at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in the evening, tired but excited. After clearing customs, we headed straight to Grab Lounge (read more about transportation in Bali here) and ordered an online taxi to our first accommodation was the Grand Mega Resort & Spa Bali in Kuta. At about 360.000 IDR per night, it was a budget-friendly choice. The resort had its pros and cons when it came to accessibility:

• Pros:
  • The staff were incredibly helpful and always willing to assist Nick.
  • The hotel was easy to navigate, with lifts and ground-floor breakfast service.
  • The room and shower were spacious enough for a wheelchair, though the toilet was a bit tight.
  • The pool was accessible without steps, making it a relaxing spot for Nick to unwind.
• Cons:
  • The facilities were quite old and worn.
  • There was one big step at the entrance, but the staff were quick to assist.

We chose this hotel because it was relatively close to the airport and it was officialy marked as wheelchair accessible. However, we would not recommend it as it does not have designated wheelchair accessible rooms and this information is misleading. Moreover, the room furnishings were very old and worn out.

For dinner we chose a cheap local eatery Warung Fajar Chinese Food Muslim. This humble eatery was our first taste of Balinese hospitality. While the entrance had a small slope with a tiny drainage hole, Nick managed to navigate it without too much trouble. The food was delicious, fresh, and incredibly affordable (meals ranged from 12,000 to 27,000 IDR). The only downside was the limited seating space—only three tables—but it was a great start to our trip.

On our first full day, we took a wood and soap carving class in Sanur (more on that in a separate post!). For lunch, we visited Kayumanis Seaside Restaurant, a beachfront spot with direct access from the Sanur boardwalk. While there was one step to navigate, the staff were more than happy to help. The boardwalk itself was a highlight—flat, scenic, and perfect for a leisurely roll. We made a quick stop at a turtle sanctuary (one step to enter) and the modern Artotel, which had a ramp for easy access.

Dinner was another visit to Warung Fajar Chinese Food Muslim, where we enjoyed the same tasty, affordable meals.

Days 3-6: Senetan Villas & Spa Resort

Next, we moved to Senetan Villas & Spa Resort in Ubud. This 5-star resort was a step up in luxury, costing around 415.000 IDR per night. While the staff were amazing and went above and beyond to assist, the resort’s accessibility was a mixed bag:

• Pros:
  • The staff created a temporary ramp out of an old door to help Nick navigate the steps to the reception and villas. It was a bit dodgy, but it worked!
  • The villas were spacious and beautifully designed.
  • The food and service were exceptional, and room service was free of charge.
  • The resort offered a complimentary shuttle to Ubud three times a day, which was a huge bonus.
  • The location was stunning, nestled in a lush green area that felt like a tropical paradise. The serene surroundings made it a perfect place to relax and unwind.
• Cons:
  • There were steps to the reception, villas, and restaurant, limiting Nick’s independence.
  • Nick needed my help to move around the resort, which wasn’t ideal.

On our first day in Ubud, we had lunch at Citrus Berry, a charming café with three steps at the entrance. The staff were quick to assist Nick, and the food was worth the effort. We then explored Ubud’s local market and discovered an accessible toilet at the Monkey Forest (though we didn’t visit the forest itself). In Ubud (like in most of Bali) it’s easier to stroll on the road than on the pavement as the sidewalks are uneven and very often obstructed e.g. with scooters.

In Ubud, as in much of Bali, navigating the streets in a wheelchair often means it’s easier to roll on the road rather than the pavement. The sidewalks, while present, are frequently uneven, cracked, or obstructed by parked scooters, street vendors, or other obstacles. This makes the pavement challenging and sometimes unsafe for wheelchair users. On the other hand, the roads, though busier, tend to be smoother and more predictable. Of course, this requires extra caution due to traffic, but with attentive maneuvering and the generally slower pace of vehicles in Ubud, it’s often the more practical option.

For the next two days, I explored Ubud solo while Nick relaxed at the resort. I did the Sweet Orange Walk and the Campuhan Ridge Walk, both of which were stunning but not fully wheelchair-friendly. I especially enjoyed pineapple pancakes at Bamboo Kitchen. It’s a picturesque place but not wheelchair accessible. For lunch, I grabbed takeaway from Warung Boga Sari, a cozy spot set in a temple. While it was a bit tricky to navigate in a wheelchair, Nick would manage with some effort.

On our final day in Ubud, we embarked on the Sweet Orange Walk together. The walk begins on Kajeng Street, winding through stalls filled with colorful souvenirs. After a short, steep section, the path continues until you reach a turnoff to the left, leading into the picturesque rice fields. While the rice field path was slightly uneven, Nick thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful stroll. We capped off the day with dinner at Sweet Orange Warung, which had a step-free section, making it easy for Nick to join. After dinner, we retraced our steps to attend a Joged dance show at Lotus Palace. Although the show required assistance to navigate the steps, it was a memorable cultural experience.

Final Thoughts on Accessibility in Bali (So Far)

Bali is a destination that requires a lot of planning for wheelchair users, but it’s possible to enjoy your holidays here in a wheelchair without spending a lot of money and hiring private drivers. While many places have steps or uneven paths, the Balinese people are incredibly kind and willing to help. We found that communication and a bit of creativity (like the makeshift ramp at Senetan Villas) can go a long way. Stay tuned for the next part of our journey!

Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) is Bali’s main airport and has made some efforts to improve accessibility. Here’s what to expect:

• Ramps and Elevators: The airport is equipped with ramps and elevators, making it relatively easy to navigate for wheelchair users. However, be prepared for some obstacles, such as poles or barriers near elevator entrances, which can occasionally make access a bit challenging.
• Assistance Services: You can request wheelchair assistance when booking your flight. Staff are generally helpful and will guide you through immigration and baggage claim. However, some low-cost airlines might charge you extra for a wheelchair assistance in Asia.
• Transport from the Airport: We recommend using Grab or Gojek for transportation from the airport. Both services are convenient, reliable, and widely used in Bali. At the airport, you’ll find dedicated Grab and Gojek Lounges where passengers can wait for drivers. Simply follow the instructions and images provided in the app to locate the pickup point. The process is straightforward, and the lounges are well-marked. From our experience, all Grab and Gojek cars we used had spacious boots, which made it easy to accommodate Nick’s non-foldable wheelchair. The drivers were helpful and patient, ensuring a smooth loading and unloading process.
• Bali Access Travel offers vehicles with ramps or lifts. We did not use their services as we prefer budget solutions.

Getting Around Bali: Options for Wheelchair Users

Bali’s public transportation system is not wheelchair-friendly, but there are alternatives:

a) Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab and Gojek)

• Grab and Gojek: These are popular ride-hailing apps in Bali. While cars are not wheelchair-accessible, you can use them to transport your wheelchair if you can transfer into the car. Keep in mind that online taxis are restricted or forbidden in certain areas of Bali.
• Motorbike Taxis: Not an option for wheelchair users, as they are unsuitable for accessibility needs.

b) Accessible Taxis and Private Transfers

• Private drivers: Hiring a private driver can be more cost-effective than using online taxis, especially if you’re comfortable negotiating prices. Many private drivers in Bali speak good English and are happy to share insights about the island, including local attractions, hidden gems, and even personal stories about their lives and culture. This makes the journey not just a ride, but an enriching experience. Some companies, like Bali Access Travel, offer vans with ramps or lifts. These are the most convenient option for wheelchair users.
• Cost: Private transfers are more expensive than regular taxis but provide the necessary accessibility and comfort.
• Booking: Always book in advance, as accessible vehicles are limited.

c) Bemos

• Bemos (Minivans): These shared minivans, known as bemos, are not accessible and can often be cramped and uncomfortable. However, they are the cheapest mode of transportation in Bali, so we decided to give it a try with Nick!
• The most reliable route we found is Pemuteran to Lovina/Singaraja. We believe the minivans start from Gilimanuk, though we’re not entirely sure. Bemos are easy to spot—they are typically burgundy in color. During our trip in March 2025, the bemos we observed were surprisingly empty, with only up to four passengers on the one we took.

d) Kura Kura and Perama:

• Kura Kura (a tourist bus service) and Perama (a shuttle bus service): These are not accessible means of transportation for wheelchair users. These services lack the necessary facilities, such as ramps or lifts, making it difficult or impossible for individuals with mobility challenges to board.
• Since disabled travelers often require a companion, the combined cost of two tickets can be comparable to or even higher than hiring a taxi.
• These services typically operate only once a day and involve longer travel times, which can be inconvenient for those with limited mobility or time constraints.

Transportation Costs in Bali

To help you plan your travels, here’s a breakdown of the prices that we paid/were offered for different routes using taxis, online taxis (like Grab or Gojek), and bemos. Prices may vary depending on distance, time of day, and negotiation skills, but this table provides a general idea of what to expect.

Challenges of Accessibility in Bali

While Bali is working on improving accessibility, there are still significant challenges:

• Uneven Sidewalks: Sidewalks in Bali are often uneven, narrow, or obstructed by parked scooters, making it difficult for wheelchair users to navigate independently.
• Lack of Ramps: Many shops, restaurants, and attractions do not have ramps or accessible entrances. Expect a lot of stairs everywhere.
• Traffic and Roads: Bali’s roads can be chaotic, with heavy traffic and poor road conditions. This can make traveling by car or van stressful.

Final Thoughts

Transportation in Bali as a wheelchair user requires careful planning, but it’s not impossible. By booking accessible transfers, hiring a driver, and choosing wheelchair-friendly destinations, you can enjoy the beauty and culture of Bali. While the island still has a long way to go in terms of accessibility, the warm hospitality of the Balinese people and the stunning scenery make it a worthwhile destination.

When Nick and I decided to take a cooking class during our trip, we were happy to find Santai Warung Cooking Class, a family-run experience that not only promised authentic Balinese cuisine but also accommodated my partner, who uses a wheelchair. What followed was an unforgettable afternoon of cooking, learning, and inclusivity.

The Class Setup: Thoughtful and Accessible

The cooking class normally takes place in the corner of the restaurant on a raised platform (quite a steep step). However, when I mentioned that my partner uses a wheelchair, the cook offered to rearrange the setup. She moved the cooking station to a flat, accessible area without stairs, ensuring my partner could fully participate. This small but meaningful gesture made all the difference and set the tone for a welcoming and inclusive experience.

That said, it’s important to note that the path inside the restaurant is a mix of gravel, cobblestone and tiles, which can be uneven and slightly challenging for wheelchair users. Additionally, there is no accessible toilet on-site. If this is a concern for you, I recommend planning ahead to ensure comfort during the class.

The Dishes: A Flavorful Journey Through Balinese Cuisine

Over the course of about two hours, we prepared a mouthwatering spread of traditional Balinese dishes. The menu included:

1. Corn Fritters (Bergedel Jagung): Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with flavor.
2. Steamed Fish (Pepes Ikan): Fresh fish steamed in banana leaves with a fragrant blend of spices.
3. Chicken Curry (Kare Ayam): A rich and creamy curry with tender chicken and aromatic spices.
4. Mixed Vegetable Salad with Coconut (Sayur Urab): A refreshing mix of vegetables tossed with grated coconut and zesty dressing.
5. Balinese Pancake (Dadar Gulung): A sweet, green-colored pancake filled with coconut and palm sugar.

What made the cooking process even more fascinating was that all the dishes shared the same base spicy sauce, a flavorful blend of fresh herbs and spices like turmeric, ginger, garlic, and chili. This not only tied the dishes together but also highlighted the versatility of Balinese cuisine.

Each dish was a celebration of Balinese flavors, and the cook guided us through every step with patience. She told us about the medicinal uses of the ingredients we were using, such as turmeric, which stops bleeding from small wounds and prevents infections.

The Experience: Fun, Educational, and Inclusive

The class was hands-on and interactive, allowing us to grind spices, chop vegetables, and assemble dishes from scratch. The process was enjoyable, even for beginners like Nick The best part? At the end of the class, we got to savor everything we had prepared, and it was absolutely delicious! We also received a beautifully designed booklet with all the recipes, so we could recreate the dishes at home. It was a lovely keepsake to remember the experience by.

Another thing that impressed me was the zero-waste approach of the class. For example, the shredded coconut we used for the pancakes was later used to make coconut milk for the chicken curry. After extracting the milk, the leftover coconut was added to the mixed vegetable salad, ensuring nothing went to waste. It was inspiring to see how resourceful and sustainable traditional Balinese cooking can be.

• Duration: Approximately 2 hours
• Price: 300,000 IDR (about $15 USD)/per person (possibly cheaper for bigger groups)
• Accessibility: The class is not inherently wheelchair-accessible (the lack of an accessible toilet and challenging path is something to keep in mind), but the cook was more than willing to make adjustments to accommodate my partner. I carved a lotus flower, a turtle, and a rose, and I was amazed at how therapeutic and satisfying the process was. The best part? There’s no time pressure – you can spend the whole day at the studio if you like, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and unlimited refreshments (free snacks and water are provided).

Wood Carving: A Challenge Worth Taking

Nick chose the wood carving class and created a stunning lizard. While wood carving might seem intimidating at first, it can actually be more forgiving than soap carving. If you make a mistake, you can always repair it with a bit of super glue, which makes it a great option for beginners. Dika’s expert guidance ensures that even first-timers can create something beautiful and unique. The sense of accomplishment you feel when you see your finished piece is incredible, and you get to take your creation home as a unique souvenir.

Other Carving Options, Prices and Opening Hours
