Looking for a unique, action-packed day out in the stunning Maniototo region? We recently visited the Maniototo Adventure Park and had an absolute blast trying two of their main attractions: the Gold Rush Luge and Indoor Curling. Here’s our accessible access report and everything you need to know before you go!

First Things First: Access on Site

• Parking: The parking area is gravel. Be prepared that you might need a bit of a push, especially if you’re heading towards the ramp up to the restaurant.
• Toilets: Great news – there is an accessible toilet on site.
• Wheelchairs: They have two wheelchairs available for guest use: one adult-sized and one for a child.
• Building Access: The main building has a ramp to get you to the first floor where you can grab a bite to eat or a coffee. The indoor curling is conveniently located on the ground floor with step-free access.

Indoor Wheelchair Curling: A Surprisingly Accessible Sport!

This was a fantastic experience and is highly accessible for wheelchair users. Here’s the low-down:

• Getting on the Ice: The ice rink is at ground level. The staff can provide a small ramp to get onto the playing surface, but you likely won’t need it. The ice is very slick, so you’ll have less traction. Just be cautious when moving!
• How You Play: You stay in your own wheelchair throughout the game. Another player will gently hold your chair in place to keep you stable while you take your shot. Instead of throwing the stone, you push it along the ice using a special delivery stick.
• The Stone: Be warned, the stones are heavy – 20kg each! But using the stick makes it manageable.
• The Aim: The goal is simple: get your stone as close to the centre of the target (the “house”) as possible. It’s a game of strategy, precision, and a little friendly competition.
• A Cool Fact: Did you know that almost all curling stones in the world come from just two quarries? One is on the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig, and the other is in Trefor, North Wales. You’re literally pushing a piece of geological history!

Price: $45 NZD for adults, $20 NZD for school-aged children per session.

Gold Rush Luge: A Thrill Ride with Specific Access Needs

The luge was an adrenaline rush! But it’s important to note the access considerations.

• What is a Luge? This is a summer luge, so no ice involved! It’s a wheeled sled that you ride on a steel track, winding down a hillside. You control your own speed with a stick that you pull back to brake and push forward to go.
• Access Considerations:
  • Transfer & Balance: You must be able to transfer from your wheelchair into the luge cart. We would only recommend this activity for people with lower-level injuries who have good trunk control and can keep their balance, as the cart can jolt and turn quickly.
  • Getting to the Top: You can drive to the top of the luge track, but the road is gravel and steep. A 4WD vehicle is ideal, or be prepared for an assisted push up the hill.
  • Tandem Riding: You can go with someone else in a two-person cart, but be aware that the extra weight makes you go even faster!
  • Speed Control: This is key! Pull the stick towards you to slow down or stop. A word of caution from our experience: Nick decided to forgo braking and partially slid out of his seat on a sharp corner! So, use that brake, folks.

The ride itself is short but it’s packed with fun and excitement from start to finish!

Our Final Verdict

The Maniototo Adventure Park offers a brilliant day out. The indoor curling is a must-try and is wonderfully set up for wheelchair users. The luge is a thrilling adventure for those who meet the specific physical requirements. It’s a unique spot that truly offers something different for everyone.

Obstacles: 11 unique challenges tailored for wheelchair athletes—crafted to be demanding, empowering, and fun.

Companions: at least 2 companions required

Companions – Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

No Spartan runs alone. In the Para 2K, every athlete brings companions to support them on the course. At least two companions are required, and they must be arranged by the athlete themselves. For safety reasons, up to four companions are allowed per athlete.

You don’t need to submit companion names ahead of time. Instead, on race day, companions should arrive at registration together with the athlete. There they’ll complete a waiver and receive their official wristbands, which they must wear throughout the race.

If an athlete is unable to secure two companions, they can contact spartan-para@zsis.si at least two weeks before the event. Spartan ambassador Tanja will do her best to help connect them with volunteers. However, the responsibility for finding companions ultimately lies with the athlete.

Race Rules & Identification

The Para 2K follows the Open category rules, meaning all obstacles are mandatory. If an obstacle cannot be completed, the athlete must perform a penalty — most often lifting a sandbag overhead. In special cases, if a para-athlete is physically unable to do the penalty, one of their companions may step in and complete it on their behalf.

Upon registration, every athlete receives a headband with their race number and a timing chip. The number must always be visible, not only for identification during the race but also so you can later find your official photos. Companions will receive special wristbands to wear throughout the event. Please note that race numbers are personal and cannot be transferred.

At the finish line, every athlete can collect their medal and T-shirt right away. Podium winners (1st, 2nd, or 3rd in Age Group) must attend the official ceremony to claim their medals.

How to Register and Prepare

1. Register: Secure your spot in the Para Spartan division on the official Spartan Race Ljubljana website.
2. Find Your Squad: Remember, each athlete must be accompanied by two companions. Start planning your team early to ensure you have your support crew ready for race day.
3. Train Smart: Focus on upper body strength, grip endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Remember, it’s about endurance, not just speed.
4. Plan Your Trip: Ljubljana is a beautiful, accessible city. Research accessible accommodations and transportation to make your adventure seamless.
5. Be Early, Be Ready: Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before your start time. This allows for a stress-free check-in, time to adapt to the vibrant atmosphere, and a proper warm-up.

Every Para 2K athlete needs two companions to take on the course – and this is your chance to step up.

No special skills are required. Just grit, heart, and the Spartan mindset. Organizers will guide you, match you with para-athletes, and provide everything you need. All you have to do is sign up, show up, and help a fellow warrior cross that finish line.

A Vision of Possibility

Every challenge begins with a vision. Wheelmageddon, inspired by the classic Runmageddon and organized by Avalon Foundation, emerged from the Avalon Extreme project—an initiative rooted in inclusion through extreme sports. Since its debut in 2017, it has become a herald of empowerment for athletes of all abilities.

Wheelmageddon 2025 – When & Where

Who Can Join? Categories

The event welcomes participants aged 18+ who hold a valid certificate of disability. Competitors may choose one of three categories based on their condition:

• OPEN – for participants who walk or have other types of disabilities
• PARA – for athletes with paraplegia
• TETRA – for athletes with tetraplegia

Course Format – Three Levels of Challenge

Wheelmageddon is structured into three progressively challenging courses. To advance to a higher level, participants must successfully complete the prior course:

1. FIGHTER (Blue) – beginner level
2. WARRIOR (Red) – intermediate level
3. HERO (Black) – advanced level

Each course includes 10 obstacles, such as crawling under lines, slaloming around flaming torches, pulling oneself up on a rope, pushing wheeled carts backwards, and more.
Participants must complete an entire course—including all obstacles—to qualify for the next one. Omission of even one task results in disqualification from progressing.

Sailing often means freedom—the wind, the sun, and gliding across open water. For people with disabilities, it’s only possible when boats and infrastructure are inclusive. A welcoming mindset is just as important as equipment. At roll2explore, we believe that adventure should be accessible to all. That’s why we’re shining a spotlight on adaptive sailing—and sharing our personal experience with an inclusive sailing program in Valencia that proves just how empowering it can be.

What Makes a Sailboat Accessible?

Adaptive sailing programs around the world modify traditional sailboats to meet the physical needs of their participants. These thoughtful adjustments allow people with a wide range of abilities to steer, trim sails, and even race—independently or with minimal assistance.

Here are some key features that make sailing accessible:
Specialized seating: Boats are often equipped with secure, molded seats with harnesses for stability. This allows people with limited core strength or muscle control to sit comfortably and safely.
Everything within reach: Sheets (ropes), tillers, and other controls are positioned so they can be operated from a seated position.
Stable boat design: Double hulls, wide beams, and weighted keels help prevent capsizing, providing a safe and steady ride for all sailors.
Accessible boarding: Docks may include lifts, ramps, or transfer systems e.g. slide boards for easier entry.
Joystick or sip-and-puff controls: For sailors with limited upper body mobility, steering and sail controls can be managed through a joystick or even via breath-powered systems.

These adaptations ensure that sailing isn’t just possible—it’s safe, independent, and exhilarating.

Our Experience with Vela Adaptada in Valencia

One of the most well-known adaptive sailing programs in Spain is Vela Adaptada, located at the Marina de Valencia. The program is designed to give people with disabilities the chance to sail independently while supported by trained instructors and adapted boats.

Nick and I had the opportunity to take part in a session together at the beginning of May 2025 —and it was truly unforgettable. We were in the same boat, while four other participants, each with their own unique disabilities, sailed independently in adapted boats. All of the boats were modified for accessibility, and each sailor had previous experience, so confidence levels were high.

The instructor followed alongside us in a RIB (rigid inflatable boat). He provided occasional tips and made sure everyone was safe and enjoying the experience. He also helped participants get into their boats before launching and checked that all harnesses and equipment were secure.

Then came the best part: a mini regatta! The instructor organized an informal race, and we all competed against each other, navigating the breeze, catching gusts, and cheering as we crossed our imaginary finish lines. The atmosphere was supportive, energetic, and full of joy.

In 2024, Nick participated multiple times, gaining confidence with each sail and loving the independence it gave him. The sea became not a barrier, but a bridge.

Every November, one of the world’s most iconic roads transforms into a racetrack for tens of thousands of runners. Dubai Run 2024 brought that magic back with full force—and we were there to experience every high-energy, heartwarming moment of it.

What Is Dubai Run?

Part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, the Dubai Run is a free, non-competitive event welcoming everyone—from elite runners to families, school kids, and people with disabilities. The main star of the day? Sheikh Zayed Road. For just a few hours a year, the city’s busiest highway becomes a pedestrian paradise lined with cheers, music, and smiles.

Signing Up – Easy and Free!

Registration for Dubai Run 2024 was completely free, and signing up online through the official Dubai Fitness Challenge website was quick and easy. During registration, participants could choose their preferred time slot, which helped stagger the start and manage the massive crowds. Once registered, you received a confirmation email, and then you had to pick up your physical bib number before the race day.

The Starting Pack – Simple Essentials, No Frills

There was no traditional goodie bag for Dubai Run 2024, and unlike some previous events, there was no race tracking this year—just a focus on participation and fun. However, picking up your physical bib number was mandatory, as there were no digital versions accepted on race day.

If you registered early or picked up your bib the day before the run, you were also eligible to receive the official Dubai Run 2024 t-shirt, handed out at the collection points while supplies lasted.

Route Options – Choose Your Challenge

Dubai Run 2024 offered two route options:

• 5 km – Perfect for families and casual runners.
• 10 km – For more experienced runners or those wanting a bigger challenge.

We took on the 10 km route, which gave us plenty of time to soak in the views and the atmosphere—despite the crowded start! The course took us past some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks, including the Museum of the Future and Emirates Towers, with the Burj Khalifa rising majestically in the background the entire way.

The Energy at the Start Line

We signed up for the latest time slot (a little more sleep sounded great!). But, lesson learned—the later slots meant huge crowds, longer waiting times, and a delayed start. It took a while before we could even begin moving, and the density of people made progress slow, especially with a wheelchair.

If you’re planning to join next year—especially if you’re a disabled participant or accompanying someone who is—we strongly recommend choosing the earliest slot. It’s much cooler, less crowded, and you’ll have a more relaxed start.

A Show Worth Waking Up For

Even if you’re not a morning person, the pre-run show is worth the early wake-up. This year, the event kicked off with an exciting display of music, dancing, and an incredible air show, filling the skies with acrobatic jets and patriotic flair. The energy was electric—an unforgettable start to the day.

The Race Experience – Water, Cheers, and Smiles

One of the highlights? The people. Volunteers and spectators cheered from the sidelines, handed out water at frequent intervals, and offered heartfelt encouragement. We even had strangers cheering on Nick, offering help and even giving him a friendly push now and then. It was a beautiful display of community and inclusion.

After the Run – No Medal, But…

Unlike many races, Dubai Run doesn’t give out medals. But there’s still something to remember it by:

• You can download your official certificate of completion from the event website.
• Enter your bib number to find and download your race photos—perfect for sharing your achievement with friends and family.

An Inclusive, Joyful Urban Adventure

Dubai Run 2024 was more than just a fitness event. It was a celebration of movement, diversity, and connection. From elite athletes to families with strollers and participants in wheelchairs—it truly felt like a race where everyone belongs.

While often seen as a competitive activity, orienteering welcomes people of all levels—from families looking for a fun day outdoors to athletes chasing victory. The real reward? That feeling of adventure and satisfaction when you reach the finish line, having explored, strategized, and conquered nature’s course.

Introducing SNOB: Sport Without Barriers

She’ll be taking on the TR30 route, showing firsthand that limits are meant to be overcome. Her presence underscores the message at the heart of SNOB: disability doesn’t define limits.

But we are here to tell you that gliding is a sport that is not only attainable for wheelchair users, but it’s also one of the most freeing and rewarding experiences you can have. Let’s dive into the beauty of gliding and how it can be an inclusive sport that transcends barriers.

What Is Gliding? The Real Freedom of Flight

Gliding is not like conventional powered flight. It’s about understanding and using the natural air currents to stay in the air for hours, soaring with the birds. Instead of relying on an engine, gliders use rising air to stay aloft, a skill that requires knowledge and precision. The glider’s control surfaces are operated with a stick and rudder, and some gliders have been modified to make the rudder accessible for people using wheelchairs, operated by hands rather than feet.

Unlike other types of flying, gliding is often a club-based activity, where pilots gather at an airfield to practice, learn, and share their love for the sky. While learning, you stay close enough to the airfield to ensure you can safely return, and with experience, you can travel much longer distances.

From Paragliding to Gliding: A Perfect Transition

Before the accident, Nick was an avid paraglider. He loved the adventure of being up in the air, but paragliding has its limitations. Paragliders are slow and have fewer flying options, and landing in remote areas with a wheelchair isn’t practical.

In contrast, gliding is a community activity where everyone helps out. Whether it’s setting up the gliders, getting them ready for launch, or putting them away at the end of the day, there’s a sense of camaraderie that makes it a welcoming environment. And the best part? The operation doesn’t change whether you’re flying with a hand rudder or not. Everyone pitches in, making gliding one of the most inclusive sports for people with disabilities.

Affordability and Community: Why Gliding Works for Me

While gliding can seem expensive at first glance, it’s actually much cheaper than powered aviation. New gliders can be quite costly, but clubs often offer older gliders for hire at a much more reasonable price. In addition, the instructors are usually volunteers, and the training resources available in most clubs are top-notch.

For Nick, joining a gliding club has been a rewarding experience. The people are not only passionate about the sport but also willing to share their knowledge. It’s a community where everyone is encouraged to learn, improve, and enjoy the beauty of flight. It’s like paragliding, but for grown-ups.

Gliding with a Disability: Inclusive Options for Everyone

If you think you might want to learn to glide, many clubs offer great opportunities for both able-bodied and disabled individuals. Instruction takes place in a two-seater glider, allowing you to fly as a passenger, with or without taking control of the glider’s movements.

In Europe, there’s a process to obtain a Class 2 medical to fly solo, which includes observing you transferring in and out of the glider. But you only need this if you want to fly alone. Additionally, a few clubs have gliders with hand rudder modifications, and some gliders can even be modified to allow this feature.

Some gliders that are well-suited to hand rudder modifications include:

• ASK-21 – The classic two-seater trainer, also excellent for aerobatics
• Duo Discus – A two-seater designed for cross-country performance
• Pégase – A classic French single-seater glider, also great for cross-country

Most packrafts weigh between 1.5 and 6 kilograms, which makes them manageable for people with limited strength or mobility. There’s no need for a large trailer or heavy equipment—just a small pack on your back.
2. Comfort The inflatable nature of the boat means it can conform to the body in a way that rigid boats can’t. Even though the probality of pressure sores is much smaller, we would still recommend using a special cushion (e.g. ROHO).
3. Access to Smaller, More Remote Waterways One of the biggest advantages of packrafting is the ability to access waterways that larger boats can’t reach. For people with disabilities, this is an invaluable aspect of the sport. With packrafts, you can explore smaller lakes and quiet streams. This opens up a whole new world of exploration that might not be possible with other types of boating.

Safety is key—make sure to wear a life jacket, check your equipment before each trip, and stay within your limits until you’re more comfortable.
