Poland’s network of repurposed railway cycling trails offers some of the most scenic and accessible routes for handbike and wheelchair users. These paths—with their gentle gradients (typically 1-2%)smooth paved or hard-packed surfaces, and wide corridors—are ideal for stress-free exploration. As someone who has personally cycled most of these trails, I can attest to their accessibility. My partner Nick (a full-time wheelchair user) joined me on one route, and we found the infrastructure thoughtfully designed for inclusive adventures.


1. Old Railway Route (Stary Kolejowy Szlak) – West Pomerania

Route: Karlino → Zieleniewo (near Kołobrzeg) / Połczyn-Zdrój → Złocieniec
Length: 34 km / 29 km
Surface: Compact gravel/asphalt (former railbed)
Max incline: 2% | Elevation gain: 120 m / 150 m

♿ Wheelchair-friendly with few interruptions (except a small gap in Gościno).

2. Toruń-Unisław Trail – Kuyavia-Pomerania

Route: Toruń → Unisław
Length: 27 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 2% | Elevation gain: 80m

♿ Wide, marked lanes (no shared roads).
♿ Mostly flat, however, the detour to the Bierzgłowski Castle is quite steep and the last part before entering Toruń (after the viaduct).
♿ Few parts of the bike path surface are bumpy and cracked

✨ Starts near Toruń’s UNESCO-listed Old Town.
✨ Ends not far away from a 13th-century Teutonic Knights’ church in Unisław


3. Iron Cycle Trail (Żelazny Szlak Rowerowy) – Silesia

Route: Zebrzydowice (Skotnica) → Godów
Length: 15 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 3% | Elevation gain: 60m

♿ Fully paved with safe crossings at roads.
♿ Gentle curves—ideal for handbikes.

✨ Amazing infrastructure on the trail – many rest areas, two of them are equipped with AED, repair stations & charging hubs.

✨ Crosses into the Czech Republic (extend your ride!).


4. Kurzętnik – Iława Trail – Warmia-Masuria

Route: Kurzętnik → Iława
Length: 22 km
Surface: Compact gravel (90%), short asphalt sections
Max incline: 3% | Elevation gain: 150m

♿ Firm surface suitable for powered wheelchairs/handbikes/wheelchairs with FreeWheel.

Historical markers about Teutonic Knights along the route.
✨ Traces the medieval Polish-Teutonic border.
Passes Iława Lake District (picnic spots by the water).


5. Łużyce-Bory Trail – Lower Silesia

Route: Bolesławiec (Ring road) → Raciborowice Dolne
Length: 13 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 2% | Elevation gain: 60m

♿ Butter-smooth, wide path.
♿ Not crowded as it’s not a very popular cycling route.

✨ Bolesławiec city visit (picturesque, cobblestone old town).
✨ Relax at thermal baths (Termy Bolesławiec).


6. Kolej na Rower – Lubusz

Route: Stypułów → Sławocin (via Nowa Sól)
Length: 58.5 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 4% | Elevation gain: 65m

♿ Smooth transitions between surfaces.
♿ Several rest areas.

✨ Crossing the historic railway bridge over the Oder River.

7. Barycz Valley (Dolina Baryczy) – Lower Silesia

Route: Żmigród (Palace) → Grabownica (via Osiek and Narrow-Gauge Trail)

Surface: Asphalt / Compact gravel
Max incline: 4% | Elevation gain: 120m

♿ Well-marked, smooth path.
Frequent rest stops.
♿ To avoid crowds, cycle during the weekdays.

Bonus: From Osiek you can also stroll south to Prusice on an excellent cycling path.

8. Trail Around the Tatras (Szlak Wokół Tatr) – Lesser Poland

Route: Nowy Targ (PL) → Trzciana (SK)
Length: 21 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 3% | Elevation gain: 180m

♿ Challenging but doable with e-assist handbikes or strong arms.
♿ While the trail steadily climbs uphill, the incline remains manageable.

Breathtaking mountain views (worth the effort!).

9. EuroVelo 10: Krokowa-Swarzewo – Pomerania

Route: Krokowa → Swarzewo
Length: 18 km
Surface: Asphalt

♿ Seaside breeze keeps riders cool. Try to cycle downwind.

10. Opole’s Longest Rail-Trail – Opole

Route: Wiekszyce → Polska Cerkiew
Length: 16 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 2% | Elevation gain: 60m

♿ Perfect for manual wheelchairs and handbikes (butter-smooth pavement).
♿ Shaded sections.
♿ Free bike repair stations at trailheads.

Several rest stops and bike repair stations.
♿ To avoid crowds, cycle during the weekdays.

Siekierki Bridge spans 785 meters between Poland and Germany, first constructed as a rail bridge in 1892.


12. Wołów-Lubiąż Trail – Lower Silesia

Route: Wołów → Lubiąż Abbey
Length: 17 km
Surface: Asphalt
Max incline: 4% (short sections) | Elevation gain: 70m

♿ Easy, wide trail suitable for all wheelchairs and handbikes.

✨ A charming market square in Gothic Wołów.

Poland’s railway trails offer some of Europe’s most accessible cycling routes, combining gentle gradients, smooth surfaces, safety and historical landmarks. From the forested paths of Iron Bike Trail to the wetland vistas of Dolina Baryczy, these trails cater to adaptive cyclists of all abilities. As for Nick?
