A revolutionary solution born from personal need

Seatrac is one of the most ambitious inclusive tourism initiatives to come out of Greece. It’s a device designed to allow wheelchair users independent access from the beach straight into the sea. The idea came from Gerasimos Fessian, himself a wheelchair user, who lived by the coast but was frustrated by always needing help to enjoy a swim. Together with his friend Ignatius Fotiou, CEO of TOBEA (Thinking Out of the Box Engineering Applications), they developed Seatrac — a pioneering system that promised to transform the beach experience for people with limited mobility.

How does Seatrac work?

Seatrac is a solar-powered track with a motorized chair. You start by moving from your wheelchair to the Seatrac seat. With a simple remote control, you then glide smoothly along the track into the water. You can stop at any point to slip off the chair and swim. When you’re ready to return, press the button again. The chair brings you back to the beach.

It runs entirely on solar power and stays on the beach all summer. In some places, the remote is kept by a lifeguard or at a nearby stand to prevent misuse. When we visited the beach at Thermaikos Neoi Epivates near Thessaloniki, there was no lifeguard. That meant we couldn’t use the Seatrac, even if Nick had been ready to swim.

Expanding across Greece and beyond

Seatrac now operates on over 200 beaches across Greece and her islands. Its success has spread to other countries too. Italy and Croatia have installed it on a few beaches. Abu Dhabi added Seatrac to six of its busiest beaches as part of a “Beach Accessibility Project.” The city hopes this will show how serious it is about accessible tourism. But it’s still too early to know how often people use it there.

Promises vs. reality: maintenance and information gaps

The idea is fantastic, but the real impact looks mixed. Reports show that many Seatrac systems see little use — sometimes just a few visitors. Often, the only data available is already two or more years old. Maybe the data is wrong, or maybe local communities don’t promote it enough, or travelers don’t trust it yet.

Maintenance and clear information also fall short. The Seatrac website’s blog hasn’t been updated since 2022. Many Seatracs on the official map appear in grey, meaning they are uninstalled. We found comments online, including about the beach we visited, where travelers asked if the Seatrac was even working. No one replied. Their interactive map also has errors. It showed no accessible toilet or changing room at Neoi Epivates, yet both were there. This makes us worry. What if a traveler picks a beach expecting an accessible shower or bathroom, only to arrive and find nothing?

Why aren’t more people using Seatrac?

The core idea is brilliant. But rolling out over 200 systems so quickly may not have been the best plan. A slower approach, starting with fewer, carefully chosen spots, could have worked better. That way, each system could get proper maintenance and local support. Many beaches also lack staff who can help if something breaks. Sometimes there’s not even a lifeguard to hold the remote, so visitors can’t use the Seatrac at all.

Our personal observations

When we visited Neoi Epivates near Thessaloniki, we saw a Seatrac system in place, alongside accessible toilet, changing room, shaded area, and beach mats — contradicting what the official map claimed. We didn’t try the system, as Nick was recovering from surgery. Even if he had been ready, the lack of a lifeguard holding the remote would have made it impossible.

From our point of view, Seatrac is still an exciting idea. It has the potential to reshape coastal tourism for people with mobility impairments. But for it to truly succeed, it needs reliable maintenance, accurate public information, local oversight (like staff actually holding the remote), and long-term commitment — not just a burst of installations. Until then, we’d suggest travelers do extra homework, contact local hotels or municipal offices, and always have a backup plan, just in case.

This family-friendly bathhouse, opened in 2021, is an excellent option for those seeking a private and accessible bathing experience.

• Self-adjustable water temperature (hot and cold controls, the bath fills in about 5 minutes)

• Convenient parking (right in front of the bath entrance)
• Extra amenities: Air conditioning, fan, and power outlets

2. Shibaseki Onsen (柴石温泉) – Historic Therapeutic Hot Spring

 Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM / 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM (family baths) /Entry and bathing are not permitted between 2:00 and 3:00 PM due to cleaning (Closed 2nd Wednesday monthly)

For people with mobility challenges, visiting the Blue Lagoon can still be a wonderful experience, thanks to the facilities and accommodations they’ve put in place to make this natural wonder accessible to everyone.

As a wheelchair user, Nick found that a visit to the Blue Lagoon was not only possible but enjoyable. In this blog post, we’ll share our experience navigating the Blue Lagoon with a wheelchair and provide helpful tips for anyone planning a visit.

Getting There

The Blue Lagoon is located about 45 minutes from Reykjavik and 20 minutes from the Keflavik Airport, making it easy to reach by car or bus. There are various transport options, and the accessibility of these services is excellent. For wheelchair users, there are accessible buses that operate from Reykjavik to the Blue Lagoon. They have space for wheelchairs and offer a smooth ride to and from the lagoon. If you come by car, there there is disabled parking in the main parking lot next to the parking places for buses. From there, the stroll to the main complex takes approximately 5 minutes.

Entrance and Facilities

Upon arriving at the Blue Lagoon, you’ll find that accessibility has been prioritized. The entrance to the lagoon has ramps to accommodate wheelchairs, and the staff is very welcoming, ready to assist if needed. With elevators and electric door openers, the main complex is wheelchair accessible. The check-in process is straightforward. If you’re in a wheelchair or have special needs, you can opt to use a private changing and shower room, available upon request. The room is spacious and designed to provide more privacy and comfort. However, be aware that the private room may not always be available immediately, as it is shared by other guests and may require a short wait. Inside the private room there are 6 lockers.

Entry Price

The entry fee for individuals with special needs is ISK 9,990, which includes admission to the lagoon, a towel, a silica mud mask, and a drink of your choice at the in-water bar – a great value for such an incredible experience. If you need assistance, you’re welcome to bring an assistant with you, who will receive complimentary admission, a towel, and a silica mud mask as well. A Relaxing Experience for All

The smooth and even surfaces around the lagoon make it easy to move around the main area, and I found it relaxing to explore the scenic surroundings of the geothermal pool. The views of the rugged volcanic landscape, steam rising from the water, and the contrast between the white silica mud and black rocks were breathtaking. The warm water, full of natural minerals, was soothing for both the body and the soul.

The lagoon can be accessed directly with a specially designed amphibious wheelchair (one available). The deepest part of the Blue Lagoon is 1.4m/4.7ft., but most areas are shallower. However, the bottom of the lagoon is naturally uneven, making caution an imperative. An overview map of the lagoon, displaying depths and temperatures, is located by the lagoon entrance. We also managed to enter the sauna using the wheelchair provided by the Blue Lagoon.

One of the best features of the Blue Lagoon is the range of spa treatments available, and many of these can be enjoyed by wheelchair users. The most famous treatment is the silica mud mask, which you can apply directly in the lagoon. There are also in-water massages that can be tailored to your needs, ensuring that your experience is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. You can ask about accessible treatment rooms, as some have more space to accommodate a wheelchair.

In addition, the Lagoon’s Lava Restaurant offers a wonderful selection of food in an accessible setting. You can relax with a meal and enjoy stunning views of the lagoon through the large windows, all while sitting in comfort.

Nestled in the heart of the Czech Republic, Stezka Valaška (Valaška Trail) offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of nature from a fresh perspective. With its stunning views, educational elements, and interactive experiences, this treetop walkway has become a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. But what about those with mobility challenges? Is Stezka Valaška wheelchair accessible? In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the accessibility of Stezka Valaška for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, ensuring everyone can enjoy the natural wonders it has to offer.

What is Stezka Valaška?

Stezka Valaška is a treetop walk located in the Valašsko region, offering an elevated experience of the forest environment. The main feature of the trail is its wooden pathway that stretches over 600 metres through the treetops, providing spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, including the rolling hills and rich forests of the Beskydy Mountains.

Parking and getting to the attraction

A big advantage of this attraction is a free parking lot for disabled visitors located just below the Pustevny Pass. To enter the parking lot, you need to take a ticket from the machine. The barrier will then raise and you will be able to look for a free parking space. Disabled parking spots are located opposite to the barrier. You need to stroll with the ticket to the cash desk and you’ll receive there a free parking ticket. In the same building you will find a tourist information and accessible toilets. From there, your friends can walk at a leisurely pace to the attraction in about 15 minutes. But the second part of the walk is challenging – steep, rocky path. However, you can request a free ride by car from the carpark to Stezka Valaska. Ideally arrange it before visiting the attraction (via phone or email). We didn’t and I just went up by myself and asked at the Stezka Valaska cash desk for assisstance.

Entry price

Disabled visitors are entitled to a discounted ticket (250 CZK as of September 2024) and one accompanying person can enter with them for free. The opening hours vary depending on the month (https://stezkavalaska.cz/en/opening-hours).

Wheelchair Accessibility at Stezka Valaška

The pathway leading through the trees is made of smooth, wide wooden planks that provide a stable surface for wheelchair users. The trail is wide enough to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs and mobility scooters, allowing easy passage for all visitors. However, it is not sloped, and special ramps have been prepared for disabled visitors and strollers (visible in the photo). They are a little narrow although the width was about right for Nick’s wheelchair. Nevertheless, he still needed assistance on the ascent. Unfortunately the impressive Himalayan path, a 135-meter-long suspension bridge decorated with colorful Buddhist prayer flags, is not accessible. The highlight of Stezka Valaska is the glass viewing platform at the end of the walkway, located 30 meters above the ground. Look for a button there, press it and a picture of you’ll be taken. You’ll have 24hrs to find this photo on the website of Valaska Walkway (tab Fotopoint). Along the way you will find numerous boards describing local animals or famous Czech personalities. Unfortunately, there is no language version other than Czech.

Accessibility Beyond the Walkway

While the treetop walkway is the main attraction, there are also other parts of Stezka Valaška that cater to accessibility. The surrounding park area includes accessible paths that lead through lush forests, making it possible to enjoy nature from the ground level as well. For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, these paths are suitable for wheelchairs and offer a different perspective of the beautiful natural environment.
