The Hāpai Access Card is a standardized, discreet way for people with disabilities to communicate their accessibility needs to participating businesses in New Zealand. Based on the UK Access Card model, it launched in New Zealand in 2020 and is aimed at bridging gaps between businesses and the disabled community.

How to Apply

1. Submit an application online via the official Hāpai Access Card website.
2. Provide evidence of your disability or barriers you face. Accepted documentation includes:
   • Benefit Entitlement Confirmation: A recent letter confirming your Disability Allowance, Respite/Carer Payment, or Flexible Funding Allowance from MSD (Ministry of Social Development).
     • It must clearly show your Name and Address.
     • For Respite/Carer or Flexible Funding, it must show the number of days or the total amount allocated.
   • A Letter from a Medical or 3rd Party Professional: A recent letter from a GP, specialist, therapist, or support worker who is aware of your needs.
     • It must be on official headed paper from their practice or organisation.
     • It must clearly state your diagnosis and, importantly, describe the impact of your condition and the access barriers you face.
   • Other Assessed Reports: The team may also consider other official documents such as:
     • Occupational Therapy (OT) assessments
     • Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) reports
     • Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) funding reports
     • Care plans or occupational health reports
   • What is NOT Accepted?
     • Standard MSD or ACC confirmation letters (unless they specifically detail your access barriers).
     • Disability Parking Permits (e.g., Mobility Parking Scheme badges).
     • Total Mobility Cards.
     • Kiwiable Leisure cards.
3. Upload a photo of your face.
4. Pay the fee: NZ $30 plus GST, valid for 3 years.
5. Get assigned a unique card number — it’s issued very quickly, often within under 24 hours based on our personal experience.
6. Card delivery takes around a week or two by post, but you can use the card—by quoting the card number—immediately without waiting for the physical copy.

3. Ask Directly: The card is designed to start a conversation. Even if a business isn’t officially listed yet, showing them your card provides clear, professional evidence of your requirements, making it much easier for them to assist you appropriately.

Use in Europe

The Hāpai Access Card functions similarly to the Access Card in the UK, reflecting the same icon-based model. The paths are wide, flat, and mostly asphalted, making them easy to navigate with a wheelchair or mobility aid. Accessible restrooms are available throughout the gardens, and the abundance of benches and shaded areas make it a great place to unwind and soak in the beauty of native and exotic flora.

Explore Creativity at Tūranga Library

The Tūranga Library, located in the city centre, is a hub of accessibility and innovation. It features step-free access with a ramp at the entrance, elevators to all levels, and accessible toilets on every floor. Looking for views from above? The Christchurch Gondola offers a scenic ride to the Port Hills summit. The cabins have a door width of 600mm, so most standard wheelchairs won’t fit inside. However, narrow wheelchairs are available onsite for those willing to transfer. Powered wheelchairs unfortunately cannot be transported. If you’re using a standard wheelchair, it can be transported separately so that you can use it once at the summit.

At the top, the summit station includes elevators that provide access to all floors. That said, the exit from the lift on level four involves a tight turn, which may be a challenge for wider wheelchairs. There are two ramps available that lead to the outdoor viewing area, allowing you to take in the panoramic scenery. It’s a good idea to check ahead by phone or online to confirm current restrictions and view their demonstration video for wheelchair boarding.

Stroll (or Roll!) Along the Avon River

The paths running alongside the Avon River are mostly flat, paved, and spacious, making them ideal not just for wheelchair users but also for hand cyclists. The riverside route winds gently through the city and continues all the way to New Brighton along an 11 km shared cycling path, offering a scenic and accessible way to explore Christchurch from the city centre to the coast. Along the way you’ll enjoy peaceful views of the river, shady spots to stop and rest, historic bridges, and the iconic sight of punting boats gliding past.

Enjoy North Brighton Beach

North Brighton Beach has made significant strides in accessibility. You can hire Melrose beach wheelchairs (one adult, one child) and use a mobility hoist for easier transfers. Sofia is a wonderful mix of ancient history, vibrant culture, and laid-back charm — and you don’t need to spend a lot to explore it. While accessibility in Bulgaria’s capital is still a work in progress, there are plenty of places you can enjoy, many for free or at very low cost. Here’s our guide to some of the best accessible attractions and activities in Sofia, all based on our personal experience traveling with a wheelchair.

Wander through the city center and admire ancient ruins

Start your adventure by simply strolling (or rolling) through Sofia’s charming city center. Many streets are pedestrian-friendly, though watch out for occasional uneven pavements and missing curb cuts.

You’ll see the city’s long history come alive — literally under your feet — as Roman ruins and medieval foundations pop up between modern buildings. Highlights include the ancient Serdica ruins around the Largo and the old Roman streets inside the Serdica metro station complex. It’s a fascinating way to get a glimpse of Sofia’s 2,000-year-old history without even buying a ticket.

Visit museums for free

If you or your companion are disabled, many of Sofia’s national museums offer free entry for you both. That means you can dive into the city’s culture and history without opening your wallet. A few worth visiting:

• Regional History Museum – located inside the beautiful old Central Bath building; inclined platform lift at the side entrance and elevator in the museum.
• The National Art Gallery — housed in the former royal palace; inclined platform lift at the entrance.
• National Polytechnic Museum — a quirky spot for science and technology fans; vertical platform lift at the entrance and ramps inside the museum.
• Earth and Man National Museum — showcasing one of the largest mineral collections in the world; ramp at the entrance and lift in the building.

Shop, eat and explore at the Central Market Hall

Don’t miss the Central Market Hall of Sofia — a unique mix of historical architecture and modern shopping. Inside this elegant 1911 building, you’ll now find a Kaufland supermarket, restaurants, and even exhibitions in the basement. It’s like shopping in a living museum — clean, beautiful, and bustling.

You can pick up cheap souvenirs at Kaufland, such as magnets, notebooks, cutting boards made in Bulgaria, along with plenty of rose products like soaps, oils, sweets, teas, and jams. If you need a break, head to the mezzanine or basement for a meal, or to explore one of the exhibitions. There’s also an accessible restroom in the basement, making it convenient for longer visits.

Visit the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

No trip to Sofia is complete without seeing the Patriarchal Cathedral St. Alexander Nevsky, the largest Orthodox temple on the Balkans. There’s a ramp at the side entrance on Oborishte Street, but usually these side doors are locked. Your companion will need to go inside and ask a priest to open them for you.

Once inside, marvel at the golden domes and intricate icons. It’s free to visit, though donations are appreciated.

Try rakia at the Rakia Museum

Rakia is Bulgaria’s famous (and very strong) fruit brandy, usually made from grapes or plums. The Rakia Museum in Sofia is a fun place to learn more. You’ll get an audio guide and taste three types of rakia — they have different tasting sets to choose from.

There’s a small threshold at the entrance, and accessible tables are at the back. Note there’s no accessible toilet here. But it’s a memorable stop to sample Bulgaria’s national drink.

Picnic in the park

Sofia is full of leafy parks perfect for a relaxed afternoon. Head to Park Borisova Gradina (the city’s largest and oldest park) or Park “St. Nikola” for a picnic.

You can grab cheap ready meals, pastries or fresh salads at supermarkets like Billa or Kaufland, and enjoy them under the trees. Watching locals play chess or walk their dogs is a simple way to soak up Sofia’s easy-going atmosphere.

Escape to Vitosha Mountain

When the city gets hot, locals head up Vitosha Mountain, which towers over Sofia. We recommend going to Aleko Hut (1800 m a.s.l.), where it’s noticeably cooler.

Bus 66 goes there, but it’s a coach-style bus without a ramp. If your wheelchair is light and you have companions, they can lift it on board — there’s space to stay in the wheelchair on the bus, and drivers plus other passengers are generally helpful. Once at Aleko, you can grab a drink at one of the beer gardens or eat on the terrace of the hut (there’s a ramp but it’s steep, so assistance is needed, and there’s no handrail).

You can also roll a few hundred meters on an old, slightly damaged asphalt road. It’s mostly flat and offers stunning mountain views.

Discover roses at a local shop

Want a taste of Bulgaria’s most luxurious product? Try the Rose Degustation Experience, run by a family business in the city. There’s a small step at the entrance (your companion may need to help), and the door might be too narrow due to a cabinet inside. If you let them know you’re coming with a wheelchair, they’ll move it in advance.

You’ll learn about the unique Damask rose, smell rose oil in all its forms, sip rose tea or soft drinks, and taste rose delights. Even just chatting with the owners was a rich experience for us.

Where to stay: EasyHotel Sofia

Looking for budget-friendly, wheelchair-accessible accommodation? EasyHotel Sofia offers a fully adapted double room for guests with disabilities. It has a roll-in shower and toilet with grab rails. There’s also an elevator in the building. It’s a simple, no-frills place but perfect if you’re traveling on a budget.

Thessaloniki, Greece’s vibrant second city, is a fascinating mix of ancient history, lively student life, and seaside charm. But how friendly is it to wheelchair users? Our personal experience — after spending weeks there following an accident that required a hospital stay — shows a city with a lot of character, but still many challenges when it comes to accessibility.

Public Transportation: Accessible, but Not Always Friendly

Buses

Thessaloniki’s buses are officially all wheelchair accessible with low floors and ramps. However, reality is often less smooth:

• Drivers are often reluctant to assist, stopping far from the curb or outright refusing to deploy the ramp. On multiple occasions, we or fellow passengers had to unfold the ramp ourselves.
• Ticket machines are usually squeezed into a narrow front aisle, awkward for wheelchair users.
• Buses are cheap but inefficient — e.g. a hospital trip took 25 minutes by car, but 2.5 hours by bus. They’re also often late.
• On the bright side, local passengers were generally helpful and kind, frequently assisting without hesitation.

Metro

Good news: Thessaloniki recently opened a brand new metro line. It is fully accessible, featuring:

• Elevators at every station
• Wide gates and well-marked signage
• Smooth, level boarding platforms

This is a huge step forward for accessibility in the city, and a much easier way to move around than the older bus system.

Express Water Bus (“Karavakia”)

For a scenic alternative, try the Thessaloniki Express Water Bus, also called Karavakia (“small boats”). It connects downtown Thessaloniki with the nearby coastal towns of Perea and Neoi Epivates, taking about 50 minutes along the Thermaikos Gulf.

• They offer half-price tickets for disabled passengers (5€).
• There is a ramp for boarding, though it’s fairly steep and tricky, so assistance will be needed.
• It’s a popular, relaxing way to reach the beachside — just plan for some help getting on and off.

Sidewalks, Streets and General Infrastructure

The biggest everyday challenge? Simply getting around. Thessaloniki’s infrastructure is far from accessible:

• Sidewalks are old, cracked, narrow, or sometimes non-existent, with frequent obstacles like poles, signs, and parked scooters.
• Curb cuts are missing in many places, forcing you to stay on the road.
• Steep streets are common, especially if you venture away from the waterfront.
• Cars park literally anywhere, including on sidewalks and at bus stops, adding extra hurdles.

Accessible Attractions

Despite these hurdles, Thessaloniki does have several spots that wheelchair users can enjoy:

• The waterfront promenade is relatively flat and stretches for several kilometers, offering beautiful sea views. It’s one of the best places for a leisurely roll.
• Many of the outdoor cafes and tavernas have seating in summer gardens on flat ground, making dining out possible even if getting inside might be difficult.
• There are some museums and archaeological sites with accessible entrances and ramps, though always check ahead (e.g. Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum, Cinema Museum & Cinematheque or Museum of Photography).

One interesting option if you’re up for a trip outside the city is the Seatrac beach system in Neoi Epivates, a nearby beach area. Seatrac is a special device that allows wheelchair users to independently enter the sea. There is also accessible toilet and changing room, right by the beach and a shaded seating area, perfect for relaxing out of the sun.

Restaurants, Cafes & Toilets

Restaurants are a mixed bag. Outdoor seating is widespread and usually reachable, but steps at the entrances are extremely common. Accessible toilets are rare — in fact, we only encountered one during our entire stay. Even chain supermarkets like Discount Markt sometimes have steps or lack elevators to reach upper floors, which was surprising.

Accommodation

Finding accessible accommodation in Thessaloniki proved challenging and often unfairly expensive. While some hotels and hostels do offer accessible rooms, the rates for these rooms were noticeably higher than for standard ones, which feels unjust considering the essential nature of accessibility. During our stay, Nick opted for regular shared dormitory rooms at Zeus is Loose and RentRooms, which worked out reasonably well, but required some extra planning and flexibility. This highlights that while options exist, wheelchair users may still face financial and logistical barriers when looking for a place to stay in the city.

Hospital Experience

Nick had an accident during our stay in Thessaloniki and needed to spend a week at Papageorgiou General Hospital. Unfortunately, the level of care was quite low. The rooms were shared with four to five other patients, which limited privacy, and although some of the staff could speak English, many were impatient or outright rude. For example, when Nick asked for some water to brush his teeth, the nurse snapped, “It’s a hospital, not your home,” and he wasn’t allowed to leave his bed to get it himself. While the essential medical care was provided, the overall experience was rather uncomfortable, highlighting the challenges of navigating hospital care there as a foreign wheelchair user.

Final Thoughts

Thessaloniki is a lively, culturally rich city with warm-hearted locals who often step in to help when infrastructure fails. But wheelchair users should be prepared for significant challenges, from crumbling pavements and steep hills to inconsistent support on public transport.

We’d love to see Thessaloniki — with its thriving café life, rich history, and buzzing student energy — take serious steps to improve accessibility. It’s a city worth discovering, but for now, visitors with mobility needs should plan carefully, book accommodations with clear accessibility details, and stay flexible.

Early Afternoon: Central Market & La Lonja de la Seda

Head to the Mercado Central (Central Market), a feast for the senses and completely wheelchair-friendly. This vibrant modernist market is filled with fresh produce, local delicacies, and a lively atmosphere.
Accessibility: wide aisles, four adapted entrances, accessible restrooms in the basement.
Tip: Try fresh horchata (a Valencian tiger-nut drink).
Lunch: Pick up something fresh and quick inside the market or enjoy a snack in the shaded area outside. Check the Too Good To Go app for food deals.

Right across the street, visit the La Lonja de la Seda, this UNESCO-listed Gothic silk exchange features soaring ceilings and intricate stonework.
Accessibility: ramps available at entrance; smooth flooring inside.

Late Afternoon: Explore El Carmen & Free Museums

Wander through the maze of streets in Valencia’s Old Town, where most alleys are flat or gently sloped (expect also some cobbled alleys). Discover quirky local spots like the famous “cat house”—the smallest house in Valencia—tucked away on Carrer del Museu .

For a cultural break, visit the IVAM (Institut Valencià d’Art Modern), which showcases contemporary and modern art in a sleek, fully accessible building, or the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC), housed in a former convent with rotating exhibitions, peaceful courtyards, and step-free access. Another great option is the Museu de Prehistòria de València, featuring fascinating local archaeological finds in an elegant, adapted space.

If you’re in the mood for a relaxed snack or drink between sightseeing, stop at Gina Melenas – a cozy, step-free pizzeria in El Carmen that stays open between lunch and dinner (no afternoon break).

Before dinner, take a peaceful stroll through the Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia, where paths wind through lush greenery, exotic plants, and shaded benches—perfect for a quiet pause before your evening meal.

Day 2: Accessible Beach Day & Cabanyal Exploration

Valencia has three accessible beaches (Malvarrosa, Cabanyal, Pinedo), but assisted bathing services (amphibious chairs, lifeguard aid) are only available from June 1–September 15. However, wooden boardwalks are open year-round. The beaches are easily reachable by public transport (tram or bus) and feature flat promenades lined with numerous dining options.

Morning: Stroll Through El Cabanyal

Begin your day with a leisurely walk through El Cabanyal, a historic fishing district known for its colorful tiled houses and unique architectural charm. The neighborhood’s flat terrain and wide sidewalks make it accessible for wheelchair users. As you explore, you’ll experience a different facet of Valencia’s rich cultural tapestry.

For a taste of authentic Valencian cuisine, stop by Bar Carrión, a local favorite offering traditional dishes at affordable prices. The restaurant features step-free access and is known for its welcoming atmosphere and hearty meals. It’s an excellent spot for breakfast or lunch before heading to the beach.

Afternoon & Evening: Relax at El Cabanyal Beach

Make your way to El Cabanyal Beach (Las Arenas), one of Valencia’s most accessible urban beaches. The beach offers a range of facilities for visitors with disabilities , including reserved areas, amphibious chairs, changing rooms, and adapted public toilets. The flat promenade lined with numerous dining options adds to the convenience.

Conclude your day with dinner at El Coso del Mar, located directly on the beachfront. It’s an excellent place to try authentic Valencian paella—the region’s iconic dish made with rice, green beans, garrofó (a local variety of lima bean), and meat such as rabbit and chicken, often cooked over a wood fire for a distinctive smoky flavor.

Day 3: Futuristic Valencia – City of Arts & Sciences

Next, head to the Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe – an interactive science museum designed to make learning fun for all ages. Highlights include exhibits on space, physics, robotics, and human biology.

• 360° photo stage with space for wheelchairs in front row
• Wide aisles in merchandise shop (no narrow turnstiles) but usually quite crowded
• Multipurpose toilet on-site

 Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Crafts Center

Temporarily closed
 Hours: 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (closed Mondays)
 Admission: ¥210 (adults) | Free for wheelchair users + 1 carer
Showcases traditional Kyushu crafts, including Higo inlay metalwork and Aso-inspired ceramics.

Getting Around

Trams

• Limited Ultra-Low Floor Trains (“COCORO”): Introduced in 2014, these trams have no steps and wide doors, allowing easy boarding for wheelchairs and strollers. However, only one such tram runs per hour, so planning is advised (check the live map)
• Boarding: Use the front or rear doors (middle doors on retro trams lack ramps).
• Fares: Flat rate (¥180/adult); pay when exiting. Exact change required (use onboard money changers for bills).
• IC Cards: “Denden nimoca” IC cards or the 1-Day Pass (¥500/adult) simplify payments and include discounts at cultural sites.
• Limitations: Only 19/35 tram stops have platforms wider than 100cm, which may challenge power wheelchairs.

Kumamoto Castle Tour Bus (“Shiromegurin”)

• Fully accessible buses with ramps and priority seating, operating every 20–30 minutes (9 AM–5 PM).
• Connects JR Kumamoto Station to the castle and nearby attractions.
• Fares: Flat rate (¥180/ride or ¥500/day pass).
• Free WiFi onboard.

• 50% discount for a disabled traveller + 1 carer.
• We did use the airport bus and Nick transfered himself with the help of one of the passengers to a seat in the front row.
