Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, offers a range of public transportation options that are very budget-friendly. Services run from around 5 AM until midnight, making it easy to explore the city without spending much. But how accessible is it all for wheelchair users? Here’s what we discovered during our visit.

Metro: The most convenient option

The Sofia Metro is by far the easiest and most reliable way to get around. It’s modern, clean, and affordable. There are four lines covering much of the city:

• M1 (red line): Slivnitsa to Business Park
• M2 (blue line): Obelya to Vitosha
• M3 (green line): Gorna Banya to Hazdhi Dimitar
• M4 (yellow line): Sofia Airport to Obelya

The metro has 47 stations, many of which intersect. Nearly all stations are equipped with elevators, though not every exit will have one. Line M3 is the newest and best for wheelchair users, offering multiple elevators and modern facilities. Older lines sometimes only have a single elevator exit, and other exits might feature steep, old-style ramps that aren’t practical unless you have strong assistance.

Buses: Mostly accessible, with a few quirks

Most of Sofia’s buses are low-floor and have ramps. Drivers generally open the ramp for you, though sometimes they’ll need to reposition the bus due to obstacles on the pavement (often anti-parking bollards block ramp deployment).

A notable exception is bus 66, which goes up to Aleko Hut in the Vitosha Mountains. It’s a coach-style bus with steps. Still, the driver won’t mind if your companions — or even friendly locals — help lift your wheelchair on board. There’s space inside to park the wheelchair, so you can stay comfortably seated during the ride.

Trams: Luck of the draw

Sofia’s trams are a mixed bag. Some are old models with steps, while newer ones are low-floor and step-free. You never quite know which type will arrive, so be prepared and perhaps plan some flexibility into your schedule.

Fun fact: the main tourist information point in the heart of Sofia — right next to Serdica station — is actually located inside an old train carriage! There’s a special button outside to call for assistance if you’re a wheelchair user or have limited mobility. It’s a quirky spot to pick up maps and tips for exploring the city.

Trolleybuses: Mixed accessibility

Many of Sofia’s trolleybuses are accessible low-floor models with ramps. However, it’s still somewhat inconsistent, and the situation is similar to trams: it really depends on which vehicle shows up. If you’re traveling with a companion, it’s easier to handle surprises.

Ticket prices & how to pay

Sofia’s public transport is extremely cheap.

• 30-minute ticket: 1.60 BGN (transfer freely within 30 min)
• 60-minute ticket: 2.20 BGN
• Driver ticket: 2 BGN (single-use, no transfers)
• Daily cap with bank card: 4.00 BGN — after two trips, rides are free for the rest of the day.

You can buy paper tickets from kiosks, validate them at the perforators inside the vehicles, and remember: each vehicle type has a unique punch pattern, so you can’t reuse them without being caught. Inspectors do check; we were actually inspected once ourselves.

You can also pay with a contactless bank card, which is the simplest. If you take more than two trips in a day, the system automatically charges you just 4.00 BGN total. The same system works on buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the metro.

Metro tickets are separate and can be bought at machines or counters inside each metro station.

Trains: Hardly accessible, but some help available

Long-distance trains in Bulgaria are generally not wheelchair accessible. The Bulgarian railway website does have a filter for accessible trains, but whenever we tried it, it always showed zero results.

We didn’t use trains ourselves as Nick was recovering from surgery. However, we did check out Sofia’s central railway station. It has elevators, an accessible restroom, and even a special waiting room for passengers with disabilities. Staff speak limited English, but there are dedicated assistants who will probably find you before you find them. They were older men, one speaking some English, the other French, and honestly didn’t look like official employees — so don’t be surprised by this informal approach.

Affordable, yes — but patience and planning needed

Public transport in Sofia is by far the cheapest way to get around. It’s pretty accessible by Eastern European standards, especially the metro, though buses and trams still involve some unpredictability. The locals are usually very willing to help, so don’t hesitate to ask. Thessaloniki, Greece’s vibrant second city, is a fascinating mix of ancient history, lively student life, and seaside charm. But how friendly is it to wheelchair users? Our personal experience — after spending weeks there following an accident that required a hospital stay — shows a city with a lot of character, but still many challenges when it comes to accessibility.

Public Transportation: Accessible, but Not Always Friendly

Buses

Thessaloniki’s buses are officially all wheelchair accessible with low floors and ramps. However, reality is often less smooth:

• Drivers are often reluctant to assist, stopping far from the curb or outright refusing to deploy the ramp. On multiple occasions, we or fellow passengers had to unfold the ramp ourselves.
• Ticket machines are usually squeezed into a narrow front aisle, awkward for wheelchair users.
• Buses are cheap but inefficient — e.g. a hospital trip took 25 minutes by car, but 2.5 hours by bus. They’re also often late.
• On the bright side, local passengers were generally helpful and kind, frequently assisting without hesitation.

Metro

Good news: Thessaloniki recently opened a brand new metro line. It is fully accessible, featuring:

• Elevators at every station
• Wide gates and well-marked signage
• Smooth, level boarding platforms

This is a huge step forward for accessibility in the city, and a much easier way to move around than the older bus system.

Express Water Bus (“Karavakia”)

For a scenic alternative, try the Thessaloniki Express Water Bus, also called Karavakia (“small boats”). It connects downtown Thessaloniki with the nearby coastal towns of Perea and Neoi Epivates, taking about 50 minutes along the Thermaikos Gulf.

• They offer half-price tickets for disabled passengers (5€).
• There is a ramp for boarding, though it’s fairly steep and tricky, so assistance will be needed.
• It’s a popular, relaxing way to reach the beachside — just plan for some help getting on and off.

Sidewalks, Streets and General Infrastructure

The biggest everyday challenge? Simply getting around. Thessaloniki’s infrastructure is far from accessible:

• Sidewalks are old, cracked, narrow, or sometimes non-existent, with frequent obstacles like poles, signs, and parked scooters.
• Curb cuts are missing in many places, forcing you to stay on the road.
• Steep streets are common, especially if you venture away from the waterfront.
• Cars park literally anywhere, including on sidewalks and at bus stops, adding extra hurdles.

Accessible Attractions

Despite these hurdles, Thessaloniki does have several spots that wheelchair users can enjoy:

• The waterfront promenade is relatively flat and stretches for several kilometers, offering beautiful sea views. It’s one of the best places for a leisurely roll.
• Many of the outdoor cafes and tavernas have seating in summer gardens on flat ground, making dining out possible even if getting inside might be difficult.
• There are some museums and archaeological sites with accessible entrances and ramps, though always check ahead (e.g. Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum, Cinema Museum & Cinematheque or Museum of Photography).

One interesting option if you’re up for a trip outside the city is the Seatrac beach system in Neoi Epivates, a nearby beach area. Seatrac is a special device that allows wheelchair users to independently enter the sea. There is also accessible toilet and changing room, right by the beach and a shaded seating area, perfect for relaxing out of the sun.

Restaurants, Cafes & Toilets

Restaurants are a mixed bag. Outdoor seating is widespread and usually reachable, but steps at the entrances are extremely common. Accessible toilets are rare — in fact, we only encountered one during our entire stay. Even chain supermarkets like Discount Markt sometimes have steps or lack elevators to reach upper floors, which was surprising.

Accommodation

Finding accessible accommodation in Thessaloniki proved challenging and often unfairly expensive. While some hotels and hostels do offer accessible rooms, the rates for these rooms were noticeably higher than for standard ones, which feels unjust considering the essential nature of accessibility. During our stay, Nick opted for regular shared dormitory rooms at Zeus is Loose and RentRooms, which worked out reasonably well, but required some extra planning and flexibility. This highlights that while options exist, wheelchair users may still face financial and logistical barriers when looking for a place to stay in the city.

Hospital Experience

Nick had an accident during our stay in Thessaloniki and needed to spend a week at Papageorgiou General Hospital. Unfortunately, the level of care was quite low. The rooms were shared with four to five other patients, which limited privacy, and although some of the staff could speak English, many were impatient or outright rude. For example, when Nick asked for some water to brush his teeth, the nurse snapped, “It’s a hospital, not your home,” and he wasn’t allowed to leave his bed to get it himself. While the essential medical care was provided, the overall experience was rather uncomfortable, highlighting the challenges of navigating hospital care there as a foreign wheelchair user.

Final Thoughts

Thessaloniki is a lively, culturally rich city with warm-hearted locals who often step in to help when infrastructure fails. But wheelchair users should be prepared for significant challenges, from crumbling pavements and steep hills to inconsistent support on public transport.

We’d love to see Thessaloniki — with its thriving café life, rich history, and buzzing student energy — take serious steps to improve accessibility. It’s a city worth discovering, but for now, visitors with mobility needs should plan carefully, book accommodations with clear accessibility details, and stay flexible.

Traveling with a disability often means dealing with extra planning, unexpected obstacles, and unfortunately, additional costs. That’s why I was genuinely impressed—and a little disappointed I didn’t discover it sooner—when I learned about the Seoul Danurim Accessible Tourism Center.

Although my partner Nick and I didn’t get a chance to use the service ourselves during our recent trip to Seoul (I found out too late!), we still want to share this fantastic resource with the roll2explore community. We even reached out to Danurim directly, and they kindly provided us with official photos to help spread the word.

What is the Seoul Danurim Accessible Tourism Center?

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization operate the Seoul Danurim Accessible Tourism Center, a comprehensive information hub that supports barrier-free travel in Seoul. Their services help not only people with disabilities, but also older adults, pregnant women, and travelers with infants.

Through their official website, www.seouldanurim.net, travelers can:

• Access detailed information about accessible tourist attractions, accommodations, and transport
• Reserve Danurim Minivans for airport transfers and city travel
• Rent assistive devices like wheelchairs and portable lifts—all for free

Yes, you read that right: completely free of charge.

Free Accessible Transportation: Seoul Danurim Minivan

One of the most helpful services offered is the Seoul Danurim Minivan, a free wheelchair-accessible transport service that includes airport pick-up and drop-off between Incheon International Airport and your accommodation anywhere in Seoul.

Key features:

• Fully accessible van with wheelchair lift
• Accommodates up to 2 wheelchair users and 7 companions
• Operates daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (KST)
• Completely free – including driver, fuel, and vehicle

Booking requirements:

• Reservation must be made between 2 months and 14 days in advance
• At least one person in the group must use a wheelchair
• All bookings are subject to availability and confirmation
• Proof of private travel insurance is required

Free Rental of Assistive Travel Devices

Another standout offering is the Assistive Device Rental Service, available to travelers needing support during their stay in Seoul.

Available devices include:

• Manual wheelchairs
• Shower wheelchairs
• Portable patient lifts
• Shower chairs
• Ramps (46 cm, 73 cm, 125 cm or 165 cm)

Rental period: 3 to 7 days
Cost: Free, though a refundable deposit (up to 500,000 KRW) may be required depending on the equipment
Pick-up: At a station in Yongsan (Room 101, Basement 1, 22, Huam-ro 48-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul)
Delivery: Free delivery and return available
Reservation: Must be made 14 days to 2 months in advance

How to get there:

• Connected to the mainland by a wheelchair-friendly bridge (no ferry needed).
• Parking: Designated accessible spots near the bridge entrance (free for disability permit holders).

On the island:

• Aoshima Shrine:
  • Paved paths lead to the main hall (gentle slope; manual wheelchair users may need assistance). The path can be partially covered in sand when it’s windy.
  • Accessible restroom near the entrance.
• Lush vegetation:
  • The island is a microclimate, supporting over 500 endemic species found only on Aoshima and nearby areas. 
  • There is a flat path around the island, however, most of it is not wheelchair-accessible. You can follow the paved path on the north side of the island.

Miyako Botanic Garden Aoshima

• Impressive subtropical greenhouse with spiral ramp access (3m wide, gentle slope).
• Paved “strolling course” through 10 thematic zones (1.2km loop).
• Wheelchair-available at entrance (first-come basis).
• Accessible restrooms with adult changing tables.

  Sengan-en Garden

• Accessibility: Mostly wheelchair-friendly with paved paths, though some areas have gravel. Accessible restrooms and routes are marked on maps.
• Discounts: Disabled visitors together with one companion pay a discounted entry fee (disability proof needed).
• Highlights:
  • Shimadzu Residence: Accessible exterior (gravel paths may require assistance).
  • Scenic Views: Panoramic vistas of Sakurajima from accessible viewpoints.

Tenmonkan District

• Covered Arcades: Rain/ash protection with smooth, step-free streets.

Kagoshima City Aquarium

Getting Around

Trams

• Limited Ultra-Low Floor Trains (“COCORO”): Introduced in 2014, these trams have no steps and wide doors, allowing easy boarding for wheelchairs and strollers. However, only one such tram runs per hour, so planning is advised (check the live map)
• Boarding: Use the front or rear doors (middle doors on retro trams lack ramps).
• Fares: Flat rate (¥180/adult); pay when exiting. Exact change required (use onboard money changers for bills).
• IC Cards: “Denden nimoca” IC cards or the 1-Day Pass (¥500/adult) simplify payments and include discounts at cultural sites.
• Limitations: Only 19/35 tram stops have platforms wider than 100cm, which may challenge power wheelchairs.

Kumamoto Castle Tour Bus (“Shiromegurin”)

• Fully accessible buses with ramps and priority seating, operating every 20–30 minutes (9 AM–5 PM).
• Connects JR Kumamoto Station to the castle and nearby attractions.

While the island is not fully accessible, with some planning and knowledge, it’s still possible to enjoy a memorable trip. Here’s a guide to transportation in Bali from a wheelchair user’s perspective.

Airport Transfers: Starting Your Journey

Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) is Bali’s main airport and has made some efforts to improve accessibility. Here’s what to expect:

• Ramps and Elevators: The airport is equipped with ramps and elevators, making it relatively easy to navigate for wheelchair users. However, be prepared for some obstacles, such as poles or barriers near elevator entrances, which can occasionally make access a bit challenging.
• Assistance Services: You can request wheelchair assistance when booking your flight. Staff are generally helpful and will guide you through immigration and baggage claim. However, some low-cost airlines might charge you extra for a wheelchair assistance in Asia.
• Transport from the Airport: We recommend using Grab or Gojek for transportation from the airport. Both services are convenient, reliable, and widely used in Bali. At the airport, you’ll find dedicated Grab and Gojek Lounges where passengers can wait for drivers. Simply follow the instructions and images provided in the app to locate the pickup point. The process is straightforward, and the lounges are well-marked. From our experience, all Grab and Gojek cars we used had spacious boots, which made it easy to accommodate Nick’s non-foldable wheelchair. The drivers were helpful and patient, ensuring a smooth loading and unloading process.
• Bali Access Travel offers vehicles with ramps or lifts. We did not use their services as we prefer budget solutions.

Getting Around Bali: Options for Wheelchair Users

Bali’s public transportation system is not wheelchair-friendly, but there are alternatives:

a) Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab and Gojek)

• Grab and Gojek: These are popular ride-hailing apps in Bali. While cars are not wheelchair-accessible, you can use them to transport your wheelchair if you can transfer into the car. Keep in mind that online taxis are restricted or forbidden in certain areas of Bali.
• Motorbike Taxis: Not an option for wheelchair users, as they are unsuitable for accessibility needs.

b) Accessible Taxis and Private Transfers

• Private drivers: Hiring a private driver can be more cost-effective than using online taxis, especially if you’re comfortable negotiating prices. Many private drivers in Bali speak good English and are happy to share insights about the island, including local attractions, hidden gems, and even personal stories about their lives and culture. This makes the journey not just a ride, but an enriching experience. Some companies, like Bali Access Travel, offer vans with ramps or lifts. These are the most convenient option for wheelchair users.
• Cost: Private transfers are more expensive than regular taxis but provide the necessary accessibility and comfort.
• Booking: Always book in advance, as accessible vehicles are limited.

c) Bemos

• Bemos (Minivans): These shared minivans, known as bemos, are not accessible and can often be cramped and uncomfortable. However, they are the cheapest mode of transportation in Bali, so we decided to give it a try with Nick!
• The most reliable route we found is Pemuteran to Lovina/Singaraja. We believe the minivans start from Gilimanuk, though we’re not entirely sure. Bemos are easy to spot—they are typically burgundy in color. During our trip in March 2025, the bemos we observed were surprisingly empty, with only up to four passengers on the one we took.

d) Kura Kura and Perama:

• Kura Kura (a tourist bus service) and Perama (a shuttle bus service): These are not accessible means of transportation for wheelchair users. These services lack the necessary facilities, such as ramps or lifts, making it difficult or impossible for individuals with mobility challenges to board.
• Since disabled travelers often require a companion, the combined cost of two tickets can be comparable to or even higher than hiring a taxi.
• These services typically operate only once a day and involve longer travel times, which can be inconvenient for those with limited mobility or time constraints.

To help you plan your travels, here’s a breakdown of the prices that we paid/were offered for different routes using taxis, online taxis (like Grab or Gojek), and bemos. Prices may vary depending on distance, time of day, and negotiation skills, but this table provides a general idea of what to expect.

While Bali is working on improving accessibility, there are still significant challenges:

• Uneven Sidewalks: Sidewalks in Bali are often uneven, narrow, or obstructed by parked scooters, making it difficult for wheelchair users to navigate independently.
• Lack of Ramps: Many shops, restaurants, and attractions do not have ramps or accessible entrances. Expect a lot of stairs everywhere.
• Traffic and Roads: Bali’s roads can be chaotic, with heavy traffic and poor road conditions. This can make traveling by car or van stressful.

• Mixed Accessibility Routes: Routes 5, 6, 16, 48, 58, 72, and 86 are serviced by a mix of low-floor and high-floor trams. If you’re using these routes, it’s a good idea to check the tram type before boarding.
• Accessible Stops (Super Stops): Look for stops marked with the wheelchair symbol. These stops have ramps or level access to low-floor trams.
• Free Tram Zone: Within the city center, trams are free for everyone, making it easy to hop on and off as you explore.
• Plan Ahead: Use the PTV (Public Transport Victoria) app or website to check which trams on your route are low-floor and accessible.

Queenstown, New Zealand, is a stunning destination, and getting around the city is made easier thanks to Orbus, the local bus service. As a disabled traveler, I was curious about how accessible and convenient the system would be, and I’m happy to share my experience.

Accessibility of Buses

Orbus buses are generally wheelchair accessible, with low-floor designs and ramps to make boarding easier. Each bus has designated spaces for wheelchairs and mobility aids, and drivers are usually helpful in assisting passengers with disabilities. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check the accessibility of your specific route, as some older buses might have limitations (updates on Facebook via OrbusQT).

Routes and Coverage

Orbus covers a wide range of routes across Queenstown, connecting key areas like the city center, Frankton, Arrowtown, and even the airport. One of the most useful routes for travelers is Bus Number 1, which runs between the Sunshine Bay, city center and Queenstown Airport. This makes it incredibly convenient for those flying in or out of the city.

Prices and Bee Card

You can only use cash or a Bee Card to pay for your bus fare. Bank and credit cards cannot be used on buses to pay for a bus fare. Fares are affordable, with a single ride costing around 4 NZD in cash or 2 NZD with a Bee Card. For the Bus Number 1 route to the airport, the fare is 10 NZD without a Bee Card. If you plan to use the buses frequently, I highly recommend getting a Bee Card. This reusable smart card offers discounted fares and can be topped up online, at the bus driver or at designated retailers. To get one, simply visit the Orbus website or pick one up at local outlets. It’s a small investment of 5 NZD that makes traveling even more convenient. Moreover, you can use your Bee Card for local public transport not only in Queenstown but also in Northland, Waikato, Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Manawatū-Whanganui, Nelson, Otago (Dunedin) and Invercargill.

Frequency of Buses

Buses run regularly, with most routes operating every 15–60 minutes. Bus Number 1 to the airport generally operates every 15 minutes, making it a stress-free option for catching your flight. However, it’s always a good idea to check the schedule in advance, especially if you’re traveling early in the morning or late at night. If you’re a Bee Card holder taking two buses in a single trip, you may only pay for a single fare when you transfer from your first bus to your second bus within 45 minutes of tagging off the first bus. Always remember to tag on and off.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Orbus Queenstown is a reliable and accessible option for disabled travelers. While there’s always room for improvement (like more frequent services on less popular routes), the system is a great way to explore this beautiful city without the stress of driving or parking. However, as a disabled traveler, exploring the town’s public transport system might raise some questions about accessibility.

Zakopane’s Bus Network: An Overview

Zakopane’s public transport system consists primarily of buses and minibuses, which are the easiest way to get around the town and surrounding areas. While Zakopane is small and manageable by foot in many places, buses are crucial for those who want to explore more distant parts of the region, like the popular Morskie Oko lake or the nearby villages. The bus routes are well-connected, running frequently during peak tourist seasons, but it’s important to note that the overall infrastructure for disabled passengers could be a bit of a mixed experience.

Accessibility of Zakopane’s Buses and Minibuses

The accessibility of public transport in Zakopane has been gradually improving in recent years, but there are still some challenges that disabled travelers may face. Some of the bus stops in Zakopane, particularly those in more remote areas, might not have proper platforms, shelters, or paved paths, which can make access difficult for individuals with mobility impairments. This is especially true at smaller stops outside the main city center.

City buses in Zakopane are low-floor, meaning that they don’t have steep steps to climb. All buses are equipped with ramps that can be lowered to help passengers with mobility impairments board the vehicle. There is a designated space for wheelchairs, but this can sometimes be taken up by strollers or luggage during busy seasons. Most bus drivers in Zakopane are willing to assist passengers with disabilities, especially when it comes to lowering the ramp or making sure a wheelchair has a safe spot.

While regular buses in Zakopane are generally accessible to people with mobility challenges, minibuses, which are owned by several small transport companies, can present significant difficulties. Minibuses are commonly used in Zakopane for longer routes that connect the town with nearby villages or more remote areas (e.g. Morskie Oko, Kościeliska Valley, Chochołowska Valley), and they are also often a faster, more frequent option compared to regular buses. We took twice with Nick a minibus in Zakopane (once from the main bus station to Kuźnice and the other time from Kościeliska Valley back to the city centre), however, Nick just climbed the stairs of the minibus using his hands. The drivers are willing to assist but in general we wouldn’t advise to use minibuses.

Tickets and Timetables

 Tickets for the city buses can be purchased on buses at ticket machines and at several bus stops. As of December 2024, single ticket costs 4 PLN and 60-minute ticket – 6 PLN. You can also buy a 24-hour (10 PLN), 3-day (20 PLN) and 7-day (36 PLN) ticket. There is also a possibility of buying the tickets online using one of the mobile apps: Mobilet or SkyCash.

Tickets for the minibuses can only be purchased onboard from the driver. Prices vary depending on the distance travelled. Minibuses depart frequently, however, the bus drivers usually wait until the minibus is full.

How to Get to a Trailhead by Public Bus

Check out our guide on accessible trails in the Tatra Mountains for an inclusive adventure! You can reach most of them by public buses. Below there is a list of useful bus stops:

• Mała Łąka (bus line 21) right by the trail Droga pod Reglami and 3 km away from the Kościelska Valley (via Droga pod Reglami).
• Skocznia (bus line 18) located at the trailhead of Droga pod Reglami.
• Kuźnice (bus lines 18, 19, 21 and 23) is the starting point of the trail to Kalatówki Meadow.
• Rówień Krupowa (all bus lines except 19) next to the park Rówień Krupowa.
• Targowica (bus line 11 and 21) located 400 m away from the lower station of the cable car to Gubałówka.

Traveling in Zakopane as a disabled person is definitely doable, but it requires a little extra planning and patience. While the bus system in the town is steadily improving in terms of accessibility, challenges like uneven terrain and inconsistent infrastructure at some bus stops may still present difficulties.
