Here’s our accessible access report and everything you need to know before you go!

First Things First: Access on Site

• Parking: The parking area is gravel. Be prepared that you might need a bit of a push, especially if you’re heading towards the ramp up to the restaurant.
• Toilets: Great news – there is an accessible toilet on site.
• Wheelchairs: They have two wheelchairs available for guest use: one adult-sized and one for a child.
• Building Access: The main building has a ramp to get you to the first floor where you can grab a bite to eat or a coffee. The indoor curling is conveniently located on the ground floor with step-free access.

Indoor Wheelchair Curling: A Surprisingly Accessible Sport!

This was a fantastic experience and is highly accessible for wheelchair users. Here’s the low-down:

• Getting on the Ice: The ice rink is at ground level. The staff can provide a small ramp to get onto the playing surface, but you likely won’t need it. The ice is very slick, so you’ll have less traction. Just be cautious when moving!
• How You Play: You stay in your own wheelchair throughout the game. Another player will gently hold your chair in place to keep you stable while you take your shot. Instead of throwing the stone, you push it along the ice using a special delivery stick.
• The Stone: Be warned, the stones are heavy – 20kg each! But using the stick makes it manageable.
• The Aim: The goal is simple: get your stone as close to the centre of the target (the “house”) as possible. It’s a game of strategy, precision, and a little friendly competition.
• A Cool Fact: Did you know that almost all curling stones in the world come from just two quarries? One is on the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig, and the other is in Trefor, North Wales. You’re literally pushing a piece of geological history!

Price: $45 NZD for adults, $20 NZD for school-aged children per session.

Gold Rush Luge: A Thrill Ride with Specific Access Needs

The luge was an adrenaline rush! But it’s important to note the access considerations.

• What is a Luge? This is a summer luge, so no ice involved! It’s a wheeled sled that you ride on a steel track, winding down a hillside. You control your own speed with a stick that you pull back to brake and push forward to go.
• Access Considerations:
  • Transfer & Balance: You must be able to transfer from your wheelchair into the luge cart. We would only recommend this activity for people with lower-level injuries who have good trunk control and can keep their balance, as the cart can jolt and turn quickly.
  • Getting to the Top: You can drive to the top of the luge track, but the road is gravel and steep. A 4WD vehicle is ideal, or be prepared for an assisted push up the hill.
  • Tandem Riding: You can go with someone else in a two-person cart, but be aware that the extra weight makes you go even faster!
  • Speed Control: This is key! Pull the stick towards you to slow down or stop. A word of caution from our experience: Nick decided to forgo braking and partially slid out of his seat on a sharp corner! So, use that brake, folks.

The ride itself is short but it’s packed with fun and excitement from start to finish!

Our Final Verdict

The Maniototo Adventure Park offers a brilliant day out. The indoor curling is a must-try and is wonderfully set up for wheelchair users. The luge is a thrilling adventure for those who meet the specific physical requirements. It’s a unique spot that truly offers something different for everyone.

The Hāpai Access Card is a standardized, discreet way for people with disabilities to communicate their accessibility needs to participating businesses in New Zealand. Based on the UK Access Card model, it launched in New Zealand in 2020 and is aimed at bridging gaps between businesses and the disabled community.

How to Apply

1. Submit an application online via the official Hāpai Access Card website.
2. Provide evidence of your disability or barriers you face. Accepted documentation includes:
   • Benefit Entitlement Confirmation: A recent letter confirming your Disability Allowance, Respite/Carer Payment, or Flexible Funding Allowance from MSD (Ministry of Social Development).
     • It must clearly show your Name and Address.
     • For Respite/Carer or Flexible Funding, it must show the number of days or the total amount allocated.
   • A Letter from a Medical or 3rd Party Professional: A recent letter from a GP, specialist, therapist, or support worker who is aware of your needs.
     • It must be on official headed paper from their practice or organisation.
     • It must clearly state your diagnosis and, importantly, describe the impact of your condition and the access barriers you face.
   • Other Assessed Reports: The team may also consider other official documents such as:
     • Occupational Therapy (OT) assessments
     • Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) reports
     • Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) funding reports
     • Care plans or occupational health reports
   • What is NOT Accepted?
     • Standard MSD or ACC confirmation letters (unless they specifically detail your access barriers).
     • Disability Parking Permits (e.g., Mobility Parking Scheme badges).
     • Total Mobility Cards.
     • Kiwiable Leisure cards.
3. Upload a photo of your face.
4. Pay the fee: NZ $30 plus GST, valid for 3 years.
5. Get assigned a unique card number — it’s issued very quickly, often within under 24 hours based on our personal experience.
6. Card delivery takes around a week or two by post, but you can use the card—by quoting the card number—immediately without waiting for the physical copy.

2. Look for the Logo: Keep an eye out for the Hāpai Card logo on venue websites, at information desks, or on entrance doors. This logo is a sign that the staff are trained to understand your needs.
3. Ask Directly: The card is designed to start a conversation. Even if a business isn’t officially listed yet, showing them your card provides clear, professional evidence of your requirements, making it much easier for them to assist you appropriately.

Use in Europe

The Hāpai Access Card functions similarly to the Access Card in the UK, reflecting the same icon-based model. This means your card is not just for use in Aotearoa; it’s your key to a vast network of thousands of participating venues across the United Kingdom and Europe. The two schemes are fully partnered, meaning businesses that accept the UK Access Card are trained to recognise and understand the icons on your Hāpai Card. New Zealand’s Great Rides are world-renowned for their scenery, variety, and sense of adventure. But how accessible are they for riders using adaptive bikes, trikes, or wheelchairs? At Roll2Explore we set out to answer this question by riding several of the iconic trails with Nick, who uses a wheelchair. Our journey took us along the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Alps 2 Ocean, trails around Queenstown and the Around the Mountains route.

What we discovered is encouraging: while every trail comes with its own challenges, there are now more resources than ever before to help adaptive riders plan their adventures.

Otago Central Rail Trail (152 km)

Location: Central Otago, South Island
Accessible Section: Wide gravel path, gentle gradients (max 1:50), well-maintained, many flat sections.
Challenges: None major; long distances between towns; the Tiroti bridge between Daisybank and Hyde requires a short detour off the trail.
Itineraries: We would recommend a multiday itinerary. For a day trip, definitely the highlight of the trail is the Auripo to Lauder section, passing through two long tunnels and the dramatic Poolburn Gorge. The Omakau to Lauder section is another standout, offering classic Otago scenery with minimal grade. Or try Omakau to Chatto Creek for a fun downhill ride ending at a welcoming country pub.

The Otago Central Rail Trail is often considered the most accessible of the Great Rides. Its wide gravel path, gentle gradients (no more than 1 in 50), and steady surface make it suitable for a range of adaptive bikes and trikes. We rode several sections with Nick, and found the trail to be forgiving and rewarding, with historic tunnels, viaducts, and small towns to break up the ride.For those planning multi-day trips, the trail is well-served by accommodation providers familiar with adaptive riders, and trike rentals are available in Alexandra and Clyde.

West Coast Wilderness Trail (132 km)

Location: West Coast, South Island
Accessible Section: The full length of the trail is suitable for handcycles.
Challenges: Narrow points (as little as 900 mm); some steep gradients; the guide meticulously rates each section with a 1-5 difficulty rating for adaptive bikes, noting max gradients and narrowest points.
Itineraries: The Hokitika to Kaniere section is a must-do. It’s largely flat, follows a historic rail line, and ends at the beautiful Lake Kaniere.

The West Coast Wilderness Trail combines history, rainforest, and coastal views. A recently updated Accessible Ride Guide highlights the trail’s narrowest points (as little as 900 mm) and steeper sections.

While some riders will need support in places, there are also long flat stretches that are perfect for adaptive cycling. Highlights include the old tramways near Kumara, Lake Kaniere, and Hokitika’s wild coastline. E-trikes or handcycles with good gearing make the experience much more manageable.

Alps 2 Ocean (315 km)

Location: Canterbury to Waitaki, South Island
Accessible Section: Varies; check specific sections.
The Big Challenge: Squeeze Barriers. Landowners have installed these to deter motorbikes. They are a significant barrier for wider adaptive bikes and people in wheelchairs. Adjacent bypass gates are available! You must contact Alps 2 Ocean in advance for padlock codes. Planning is non-negotiable here.
Itineraries: The Benmore Dam to Aviemore Dam section (22 km, on asphalt road) is relatively flat and very scenic, though riders should watch for heavier traffic during the holiday season. With Nick we cycled from Tekapo to Lake Pūkaki (35 km) – this ride includes squeeze gates (which may require assistance) and a long downhill stretch that finishes at the lake’s stunning turquoise waters.

Stretching from Aoraki / Mt Cook all the way to the Pacific in Oamaru, the Alps 2 Ocean is epic in both scale and scenery. However, it does present specific challenges for adaptive riders. Landowners requested squeeze barriers to block motorbikes. While these barriers may restrict wider adaptive cycles or wheelchair users, the trail managers have added bypass gates with padlocks nearby. Riders simply need to contact the trail managers in advance to receive access codes. Sections around Lake Pukaki and the Waitaki Valley offer more open riding, while steeper grades along Benmore Lake may require assistance or shuttles.

The trail isn’t uniformly accessible, but with some planning, adaptive riders can enjoy unforgettable stretches of alpine landscapes, glacial lakes, and rural backroads.

Queenstown & Around the Mountains (186 km)

Location: Queenstown to Walter Peak, South Island
Accessible Section: Varies; check specific sections/trails.
Challenges: The main accessible sections are paved or well-compacted gravel, but the full trail includes very steep, rugged, and remote sections that are not suitable for adaptive bikes. Narrow points can occur on shared paths, and seasonal weather can affect surface conditions.
Itineraries: For a scenic lakeside ride, consider the paved Queenstown to Frankton Arm trail (10 km). Alternatively, the Gibbston River Wine Trail (9 km) offers a gentle route with vineyard stops. The Centre Hill Shelter to Mossburn section of Around the Mountains provides a peaceful rural experience.
Rentals: Standard bikes and e-bikes are widely available for hire in Queenstown. For adaptive trikes or trailers, it’s best to contact specialized providers in advance.

Queenstown’s network of cycle trails connects lakeside paths, vineyards, and riverside rides. These trails tend to be well-maintained, though sharp turns and occasional narrow bridges can be a factor for trikes or wheelchairs. One of the highlights is the Queenstown to Frankton Arm trail (approx. 10 km one way). It’s mostly flat, fully paved, and offers breathtaking views across Lake Wakatipu to the Remarkables mountain range. Another accessible option is the Gibbston River Wine Trail (9 km), which combines gentle riding with the chance to stop at wineries along the way.

The Around the Mountains Trail offers a longer adventure, circling through Southland farmland, Mavora Lakes, and small towns. Its gravel surface is mostly smooth, though some steeper climbs and descents may require extra care. Adaptive riders often choose to tackle the easier lakeside and rural road sections, creating shorter but rewarding itineraries. With Nick, we also enjoyed cycling much of the Centre Hill Shelter to Mossburn section – a quieter stretch through wide open valleys and farmland.

Motu Trails (whole network 121 km)

Location: Eastern Bay of Plenty, North Island
Accessible Section: Dunes Trail (9 km one way, easy grade), Waiōtahe Trail (10 km) and Waipaoa River Trail (9 km)
Challenges: Well-formed, wide trails with very gentle gradients. The main challenge may be squeeze gates, which sometimes require assistance.
Itinerary: An out-and-back ride on the Dunes Trail allows you to choose your distance, with sweeping ocean views as a constant reward.

The Motu Trails offer a unique combination of coastal and riverside riding in a relaxed, small-town setting. The Dunes Trail is particularly popular for adaptive riders, with its wide, flowing path right alongside the beach – you’ll often spot surfers, seabirds, and endless Pacific views. The shorter Waiōtahe and Waipaoa River Trails provide quieter rides with a more local feel, passing farmland and river landscapes. Together, these accessible sections are a great way to sample the East Cape’s scenery at your own pace, whether you’re looking for a gentle family outing, a short spin before a swim, or a longer return ride to stretch the legs.

Roxburgh Gorge Trail (34 km total)

Location: Central Otago, South Island
Accessible Section: Alexandra to The Narrows (approx. 6 km, wide gravel trail, manageable gradients)
Challenges: Beyond The Narrows, the trail to Doctors Point becomes narrower with steeper drop-offs, which may not be suitable for adaptive cycles or wheelchair riders.
Itinerary: We cycled with Nick from Alexandra to The Narrows. It’s a spectacular ride alongside the Clutha Mata-au River, with dramatic gorge scenery and historic gold-mining remnants. The views of the gorge are absolutely breathtaking. For those comfortable with narrower tracks, the section toward Doctors Point offers even more dramatic landscapes, but it may require caution or assistance.

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is often described as the “Grand Canyon of New Zealand”, and it’s easy to see why. Towering schist cliffs, turquoise waters of the Clutha Mata-au River, and the sense of remoteness make it a ride unlike any other. Even cycling just part of the trail, such as Alexandra to The Narrows, offers a rewarding experience with dramatic views and plenty of photo stops. For riders seeking a longer adventure, the trail can be linked with the Otago Central Rail Trail to form part of a multi-day journey through Central Otago’s most iconic landscapes.

Planning Your Adaptive Ride

Across New Zealand, more trail organisations now publish accessible ride guides, detailing width restrictions, gradients, surface types, and tricky sections. Many also provide contact numbers for padlock codes or alternative access points.

The Spartan Race is coming to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and for the first time, it’s launching a dedicated Para Spartan Division—an epic, adrenaline-fueled challenge designed for adaptive athletes of all abilities.

Obstacles: 11 unique challenges tailored for wheelchair athletes—crafted to be demanding, empowering, and fun.

Companions: at least 2 companions required

Companions – Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

No Spartan runs alone. In the Para 2K, every athlete brings companions to support them on the course. At least two companions are required, and they must be arranged by the athlete themselves. For safety reasons, up to four companions are allowed per athlete.

You don’t need to submit companion names ahead of time. Instead, on race day, companions should arrive at registration together with the athlete. There they’ll complete a waiver and receive their official wristbands, which they must wear throughout the race.

If an athlete is unable to secure two companions, they can contact spartan-para@zsis.si at least two weeks before the event. Spartan ambassador Tanja will do her best to help connect them with volunteers. However, the responsibility for finding companions ultimately lies with the athlete.

Race Rules & Identification

The Para 2K follows the Open category rules, meaning all obstacles are mandatory. If an obstacle cannot be completed, the athlete must perform a penalty — most often lifting a sandbag overhead. In special cases, if a para-athlete is physically unable to do the penalty, one of their companions may step in and complete it on their behalf.

Upon registration, every athlete receives a headband with their race number and a timing chip. The number must always be visible, not only for identification during the race but also so you can later find your official photos. Companions will receive special wristbands to wear throughout the event. Please note that race numbers are personal and cannot be transferred.

At the finish line, every athlete can collect their medal and T-shirt right away. Podium winners (1st, 2nd, or 3rd in Age Group) must attend the official ceremony to claim their medals.

How to Register and Prepare

1. Register: Secure your spot in the Para Spartan division on the official Spartan Race Ljubljana website.
2. Find Your Squad: Remember, each athlete must be accompanied by two companions. Start planning your team early to ensure you have your support crew ready for race day.
3. Train Smart: Focus on upper body strength, grip endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Remember, it’s about endurance, not just speed.
4. Plan Your Trip: Ljubljana is a beautiful, accessible city. Research accessible accommodations and transportation to make your adventure seamless.
5. Be Early, Be Ready: Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before your start time. This allows for a stress-free check-in, time to adapt to the vibrant atmosphere, and a proper warm-up.

A Vision of Possibility

Every challenge begins with a vision. Wheelmageddon, inspired by the classic Runmageddon and organized by Avalon Foundation, emerged from the Avalon Extreme project—an initiative rooted in inclusion through extreme sports. Since its debut in 2017, it has become a herald of empowerment for athletes of all abilities.

Who Can Join? Categories

The event welcomes participants aged 18+ who hold a valid certificate of disability. Competitors may choose one of three categories based on their condition:

• OPEN – for participants who walk or have other types of disabilities
• PARA – for athletes with paraplegia
• TETRA – for athletes with tetraplegia

Course Format – Three Levels of Challenge

Wheelmageddon is structured into three progressively challenging courses. To advance to a higher level, participants must successfully complete the prior course:

1. FIGHTER (Blue) – beginner level
2. WARRIOR (Red) – intermediate level
3. HERO (Black) – advanced level

Each course includes 10 obstacles, such as crawling under lines, slaloming around flaming torches, pulling oneself up on a rope, pushing wheeled carts backwards, and more.
Participants must complete an entire course—including all obstacles—to qualify for the next one. Omission of even one task results in disqualification from progressing.

Christchurch is a welcoming and inclusive city with plenty of accessible activities for disabled visitors. Whether you enjoy nature, culture, or relaxation, there’s something for everyone. Here are some great options to explore:

Stroll Through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a peaceful retreat in the centre of the city, perfect for a leisurely outing. The paths are wide, flat, and mostly asphalted, making them easy to navigate with a wheelchair or mobility aid. Accessible restrooms are available throughout the gardens, and the abundance of benches and shaded areas make it a great place to unwind and soak in the beauty of native and exotic flora.

Explore Creativity at Tūranga Library

The Tūranga Library, located in the city centre, is a hub of accessibility and innovation. It features step-free access with a ramp at the entrance, elevators to all levels, and accessible toilets on every floor. Head to the top floor for a stunning viewpoint over the city, or tap into your creative side in the Creative Zone. From 3D printing and badge-making to sewing machines, everything is free to use, and staff are happy to assist.

Ride the Historic Christchurch Tram

The Historic Tramway offers a charming tour of the city with a touch of vintage flair. While not all trams are accessible, two trams at Cathedral Junction are equipped with a hoist for manual wheelchairs (max weight: 220kg). Unfortunately, the hoist cannot accommodate powered or electric wheelchairs. Still, for those who can transfer or use a manual chair, it’s a fun and informative way to see the city.

Experience the Christchurch Gondola

Looking for views from above? The Christchurch Gondola offers a scenic ride to the Port Hills summit. The cabins have a door width of 600mm, so most standard wheelchairs won’t fit inside. However, narrow wheelchairs are available onsite for those willing to transfer. Powered wheelchairs unfortunately cannot be transported. If you’re using a standard wheelchair, it can be transported separately so that you can use it once at the summit.

At the top, the summit station includes elevators that provide access to all floors. That said, the exit from the lift on level four involves a tight turn, which may be a challenge for wider wheelchairs. There are two ramps available that lead to the outdoor viewing area, allowing you to take in the panoramic scenery. It’s a good idea to check ahead by phone or online to confirm current restrictions and view their demonstration video for wheelchair boarding.

Stroll (or Roll!) Along the Avon River

The paths running alongside the Avon River are mostly flat, paved, and spacious, making them ideal not just for wheelchair users but also for hand cyclists. The riverside route winds gently through the city and continues all the way to New Brighton along an 11 km shared cycling path, offering a scenic and accessible way to explore Christchurch from the city centre to the coast. Along the way you’ll enjoy peaceful views of the river, shady spots to stop and rest, historic bridges, and the iconic sight of punting boats gliding past.

Enjoy North Brighton Beach

North Brighton Beach has made significant strides in accessibility. You can hire Melrose beach wheelchairs (one adult, one child) and use a mobility hoist for easier transfers. A beach mat is rolled out during summer (from November), making sand access a breeze. To reserve equipment, email: north.beach.accessibility@gmail.com or drop into the Surf Club on the day. Additional accessible facilities include accessible toilets and designated parking spaces.

Take a Dip in an Accessible Swimming Pool

Christchurch has several fully accessible swimming pools ideal for both exercise and relaxation:

• Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre
• Graham Condon Recreation and Sport Centre
• Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre
• Taiora: QEII Recreation and Sport Centre

All of these centres are equipped with ramps or hoists, accessible changing rooms, and disabled restrooms. Facilities are modern and staff are trained to assist when needed.

Exploring the City Centre

Christchurch’s city centre is largely flat with wide, smooth footpaths, making it easy to explore by wheelchair. Don’t miss a visit to:

• Canterbury Museum – Free entry, step-free entrance, spacious galleries, and elevator access throughout. A great place to learn about the region’s natural and cultural history.
• Riverside Market – A bustling, accessible food hub with a wide variety of local and international cuisine. The space is easy to navigate and great for a casual bite.
• Admire the ChristChurch Cathedral – While the cathedral is still under restoration, it remains one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. There are flat, open spaces around the square, making it easy to approach and enjoy the striking architecture.
• The Dance-O-Mat – A quirky, coin-operated outdoor dance floor powered by washing machine parts—plug in your phone and dance in the square! It’s on a flat surface and fun for all.
• The Margaret Mahy Playground – While designed for children, this large and inclusive playground includes sensory play areas, wide paths, and plenty of seating and shade—great if you’re travelling with kids.
• Public Art Trail – Enjoy an informal art walk featuring murals and sculptures scattered around the city. Most are located along accessible pavements, with lots of interesting photo opportunities.

Longer Accessible Walks

For those seeking a scenic and slightly longer journey on flat, accessible trails, try:

• Sumner Promenade – a coastal walk with beautiful views
• Travis Wetland Walk – a tranquil, boardwalk-style nature walk
• Lamar Track and Tawhairaunui Trail – ideal for gentle forest immersion

Accessible Accommodation

Many hotels offer accessible rooms. If you’re after budget-friendly accommodation (like us!) with accessible features, Bealey Lodge is a solid choice.

They offer:

• Ground-floor dorms with accessible bathrooms
• Ramp access at the entrance
• Plenty of space to manoeuvre in the kitchen
• Note: no elevator to the upper floor

You can also stay in private twin rooms which are fully accessible.

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, offers a range of public transportation options that are very budget-friendly. Services run from around 5 AM until midnight, making it easy to explore the city without spending much. But how accessible is it all for wheelchair users? Here’s what we discovered during our visit.

Metro: The most convenient option

The Sofia Metro is by far the easiest and most reliable way to get around. It’s modern, clean, and affordable. There are four lines covering much of the city:

• M1 (red line): Slivnitsa to Business Park
• M2 (blue line): Obelya to Vitosha
• M3 (green line): Gorna Banya to Hazdhi Dimitar
• M4 (yellow line): Sofia Airport to Obelya

The metro has 47 stations, many of which intersect. Nearly all stations are equipped with elevators, though not every exit will have one. Line M3 is the newest and best for wheelchair users, offering multiple elevators and modern facilities. Older lines sometimes only have a single elevator exit, and other exits might feature steep, old-style ramps that aren’t practical unless you have strong assistance.

Buses: Mostly accessible, with a few quirks

Most of Sofia’s buses are low-floor and have ramps. Drivers generally open the ramp for you, though sometimes they’ll need to reposition the bus due to obstacles on the pavement (often anti-parking bollards block ramp deployment).

A notable exception is bus 66, which goes up to Aleko Hut in the Vitosha Mountains. It’s a coach-style bus with steps. Still, the driver won’t mind if your companions — or even friendly locals — help lift your wheelchair on board. There’s space inside to park the wheelchair, so you can stay comfortably seated during the ride.

Trams: Luck of the draw

Sofia’s trams are a mixed bag. Some are old models with steps, while newer ones are low-floor and step-free. You never quite know which type will arrive, so be prepared and perhaps plan some flexibility into your schedule.

Fun fact: the main tourist information point in the heart of Sofia — right next to Serdica station — is actually located inside an old train carriage! There’s a special button outside to call for assistance if you’re a wheelchair user or have limited mobility. It’s a quirky spot to pick up maps and tips for exploring the city.

Trolleybuses: Mixed accessibility

Many of Sofia’s trolleybuses are accessible low-floor models with ramps. However, it’s still somewhat inconsistent, and the situation is similar to trams: it really depends on which vehicle shows up. If you’re traveling with a companion, it’s easier to handle surprises.

Ticket prices & how to pay

Sofia’s public transport is extremely cheap.

• 30-minute ticket: 1.60 BGN (transfer freely within 30 min)
• 60-minute ticket: 2.20 BGN
• Driver ticket: 2 BGN (single-use, no transfers)
• Daily cap with bank card: 4.00 BGN — after two trips, rides are free for the rest of the day.

You can buy paper tickets from kiosks, validate them at the perforators inside the vehicles, and remember: each vehicle type has a unique punch pattern, so you can’t reuse them without being caught. Inspectors do check; we were actually inspected once ourselves.

You can also pay with a contactless bank card, which is the simplest. If you take more than two trips in a day, the system automatically charges you just 4.00 BGN total. The same system works on buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the metro.

Metro tickets are separate and can be bought at machines or counters inside each metro station.

Trains: Hardly accessible, but some help available

Long-distance trains in Bulgaria are generally not wheelchair accessible. The Bulgarian railway website does have a filter for accessible trains, but whenever we tried it, it always showed zero results.

We didn’t use trains ourselves as Nick was recovering from surgery. However, we did check out Sofia’s central railway station. It has elevators, an accessible restroom, and even a special waiting room for passengers with disabilities. Staff speak limited English, but there are dedicated assistants who will probably find you before you find them. They were older men, one speaking some English, the other French, and honestly didn’t look like official employees — so don’t be surprised by this informal approach.

Affordable, yes — but patience and planning needed

Public transport in Sofia is by far the cheapest way to get around. It’s pretty accessible by Eastern European standards, especially the metro, though buses and trams still involve some unpredictability. The locals are usually very willing to help, so don’t hesitate to ask. Sofia is a wonderful mix of ancient history, vibrant culture, and laid-back charm — and you don’t need to spend a lot to explore it. While accessibility in Bulgaria’s capital is still a work in progress, there are plenty of places you can enjoy, many for free or at very low cost. Here’s our guide to some of the best accessible attractions and activities in Sofia, all based on our personal experience traveling with a wheelchair.

Wander through the city center and admire ancient ruins

Start your adventure by simply strolling (or rolling) through Sofia’s charming city center. Many streets are pedestrian-friendly, though watch out for occasional uneven pavements and missing curb cuts.

You’ll see the city’s long history come alive — literally under your feet — as Roman ruins and medieval foundations pop up between modern buildings. Highlights include the ancient Serdica ruins around the Largo and the old Roman streets inside the Serdica metro station complex. It’s a fascinating way to get a glimpse of Sofia’s 2,000-year-old history without even buying a ticket.

Visit museums for free

If you or your companion are disabled, many of Sofia’s national museums offer free entry for you both. That means you can dive into the city’s culture and history without opening your wallet. A few worth visiting:

• Regional History Museum – located inside the beautiful old Central Bath building; inclined platform lift at the side entrance and elevator in the museum.
• The National Art Gallery — housed in the former royal palace; inclined platform lift at the entrance.
• National Polytechnic Museum — a quirky spot for science and technology fans; vertical platform lift at the entrance and ramps inside the museum.
• Earth and Man National Museum — showcasing one of the largest mineral collections in the world; ramp at the entrance and lift in the building.

Shop, eat and explore at the Central Market Hall

Don’t miss the Central Market Hall of Sofia — a unique mix of historical architecture and modern shopping. Inside this elegant 1911 building, you’ll now find a Kaufland supermarket, restaurants, and even exhibitions in the basement. It’s like shopping in a living museum — clean, beautiful, and bustling.

You can pick up cheap souvenirs at Kaufland, such as magnets, notebooks, cutting boards made in Bulgaria, along with plenty of rose products like soaps, oils, sweets, teas, and jams. If you need a break, head to the mezzanine or basement for a meal, or to explore one of the exhibitions. There’s also an accessible restroom in the basement, making it convenient for longer visits.

Visit the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

No trip to Sofia is complete without seeing the Patriarchal Cathedral St. Alexander Nevsky, the largest Orthodox temple on the Balkans. There’s a ramp at the side entrance on Oborishte Street, but usually these side doors are locked. Your companion will need to go inside and ask a priest to open them for you.

Once inside, marvel at the golden domes and intricate icons. It’s free to visit, though donations are appreciated.

Try rakia at the Rakia Museum

Rakia is Bulgaria’s famous (and very strong) fruit brandy, usually made from grapes or plums. The Rakia Museum in Sofia is a fun place to learn more. You’ll get an audio guide and taste three types of rakia — they have different tasting sets to choose from.

There’s a small threshold at the entrance, and accessible tables are at the back. Note there’s no accessible toilet here. But it’s a memorable stop to sample Bulgaria’s national drink.

Picnic in the park

Sofia is full of leafy parks perfect for a relaxed afternoon. Head to Park Borisova Gradina (the city’s largest and oldest park) or Park “St. Nikola” for a picnic.

You can grab cheap ready meals, pastries or fresh salads at supermarkets like Billa or Kaufland, and enjoy them under the trees. Watching locals play chess or walk their dogs is a simple way to soak up Sofia’s easy-going atmosphere.

Escape to Vitosha Mountain

When the city gets hot, locals head up Vitosha Mountain, which towers over Sofia. We recommend going to Aleko Hut (1800 m a.s.l.), where it’s noticeably cooler.

Bus 66 goes there, but it’s a coach-style bus without a ramp. If your wheelchair is light and you have companions, they can lift it on board — there’s space to stay in the wheelchair on the bus, and drivers plus other passengers are generally helpful. Once at Aleko, you can grab a drink at one of the beer gardens or eat on the terrace of the hut (there’s a ramp but it’s steep, so assistance is needed, and there’s no handrail).

You can also roll a few hundred meters on an old, slightly damaged asphalt road. It’s mostly flat and offers stunning mountain views.

Discover roses at a local shop

Want a taste of Bulgaria’s most luxurious product? Try the Rose Degustation Experience, run by a family business in the city. There’s a small step at the entrance (your companion may need to help), and the door might be too narrow due to a cabinet inside. If you let them know you’re coming with a wheelchair, they’ll move it in advance.

You’ll learn about the unique Damask rose, smell rose oil in all its forms, sip rose tea or soft drinks, and taste rose delights. Even just chatting with the owners was a rich experience for us.

Where to stay: EasyHotel Sofia

Looking for budget-friendly, wheelchair-accessible accommodation? EasyHotel Sofia offers a fully adapted double room for guests with disabilities. It has a roll-in shower and toilet with grab rails. There’s also an elevator in the building. It’s a simple, no-frills place but perfect if you’re traveling on a budget.

A revolutionary solution born from personal need

Seatrac is one of the most ambitious inclusive tourism initiatives to come out of Greece. It’s a device designed to allow wheelchair users independent access from the beach straight into the sea. The idea came from Gerasimos Fessian, himself a wheelchair user, who lived by the coast but was frustrated by always needing help to enjoy a swim. Together with his friend Ignatius Fotiou, CEO of TOBEA (Thinking Out of the Box Engineering Applications), they developed Seatrac — a pioneering system that promised to transform the beach experience for people with limited mobility.

How does Seatrac work?

Seatrac is a solar-powered track with a motorized chair. You start by moving from your wheelchair to the Seatrac seat. With a simple remote control, you then glide smoothly along the track into the water. You can stop at any point to slip off the chair and swim. When you’re ready to return, press the button again. The chair brings you back to the beach.

It runs entirely on solar power and stays on the beach all summer. In some places, the remote is kept by a lifeguard or at a nearby stand to prevent misuse. When we visited the beach at Thermaikos Neoi Epivates near Thessaloniki, there was no lifeguard. That meant we couldn’t use the Seatrac, even if Nick had been ready to swim.

Expanding across Greece and beyond

Seatrac now operates on over 200 beaches across Greece and her islands. Its success has spread to other countries too. Italy and Croatia have installed it on a few beaches. Abu Dhabi added Seatrac to six of its busiest beaches as part of a “Beach Accessibility Project.” The city hopes this will show how serious it is about accessible tourism. But it’s still too early to know how often people use it there.

Promises vs. reality: maintenance and information gaps

The idea is fantastic, but the real impact looks mixed. Reports show that many Seatrac systems see little use — sometimes just a few visitors. Often, the only data available is already two or more years old. Maybe the data is wrong, or maybe local communities don’t promote it enough, or travelers don’t trust it yet.

Maintenance and clear information also fall short. The Seatrac website’s blog hasn’t been updated since 2022. Many Seatracs on the official map appear in grey, meaning they are uninstalled. We found comments online, including about the beach we visited, where travelers asked if the Seatrac was even working. No one replied. Their interactive map also has errors. It showed no accessible toilet or changing room at Neoi Epivates, yet both were there. This makes us worry. What if a traveler picks a beach expecting an accessible shower or bathroom, only to arrive and find nothing?

Why aren’t more people using Seatrac?

The core idea is brilliant. But rolling out over 200 systems so quickly may not have been the best plan. A slower approach, starting with fewer, carefully chosen spots, could have worked better. That way, each system could get proper maintenance and local support. Many beaches also lack staff who can help if something breaks. Sometimes there’s not even a lifeguard to hold the remote, so visitors can’t use the Seatrac at all.

Our personal observations

When we visited Neoi Epivates near Thessaloniki, we saw a Seatrac system in place, alongside accessible toilet, changing room, shaded area, and beach mats — contradicting what the official map claimed. We didn’t try the system, as Nick was recovering from surgery. Even if he had been ready, the lack of a lifeguard holding the remote would have made it impossible.

From our point of view, Seatrac is still an exciting idea. It has the potential to reshape coastal tourism for people with mobility impairments. But for it to truly succeed, it needs reliable maintenance, accurate public information, local oversight (like staff actually holding the remote), and long-term commitment — not just a burst of installations. Until then, we’d suggest travelers do extra homework, contact local hotels or municipal offices, and always have a backup plan, just in case.
